I’ve used the arts to help navigate life, cope with a long term disability, and to find enchantment and insight.  I share my art freely on the internet to try to share both a sense of wonder and recognize the struggles we all go through.

Pledges at any level will make you eligible for exclusive materials through patreon, including stories, essays and original art work. You'll also be part of give-aways every other month, starting in January of 2018.  You'll be the first to know about new projects.

In 2018, I'll start putting together an illustrated book about depression and coping with a long term disability.  I want to make this book available for free on the internet, as well as a print on demand copy for those who can afford a print copy.

I’d like to encourage everyone to get on with their creative work. We all have unique stories to tell in unique ways. There are so many ways we are told through our lives to conform, to be quiet, and to not stir up trouble. I hope to resist that in my life and to help others resist. What we hide, what we cloak in shame, becomes toxic and keeps us from living fully. We are meant to learn and share our thoughts all through our lives. I hope to do what it takes to keep my sense of wonder alive and to report it back to you.

I've had Spasmatic Paraparalysis, a degenerative neurological disorder similar to Multiple Sclerosis, since I was 16.  I've graduated from using a cane, then a walker, and now often a wheelchair.  I also have a mild bi-polar disorder that leans to the depressive side. I grew up in a chaotic environment and it’s only in the past decade I’ve learned what a rich source of story and growth that is. The gift of aging is that I can see more clearly the strength of my physical and emotional scars.

For most of my life, I've created without much financial support, but I've volunteered with disadvantaged kids, people with disabilities, and people navigating changes in life.

If your goal in life is to be creative, you have to accept that you're probably not going to make a lot of money at it.  I survive on a small disability check and the art I sell.  I receive help from friends and family, and I feel grateful that so many see value in what I do.  It's what keeps brings in the light when life seems dark and unmanageable.

I've set up this page to try to get a bit more steady income, so I'm not scrambling so much to meet medical co-pays, utilities, and internet costs.  I want to concentrate on getting my illustrated book and stories written.

All patrons will be eligible for give-aways throughout the year.

If you'd rather not make a monthly donation, you can make a one time donation through paypal.  You can email me at joyzmailbox @gmail.com for a link.
