My name is Andrew Walton, creator of the website Cracking The Happiness Code - an ambitious yet lighthearted project that aims to, rather immodestly, change the world through a combination of scientific insight, personal experience, and caustic wit.

The problem with traditional approaches to improving our lives — from dieting, to drug laws, to conspicuous consumption, to environmentalism, is that our solutions are usually built upon a faulty assumption:

That we, as human creatures, are inherently flawed.

And therefore, in order to create a better world, we must repress and deny ourselves, lest human nature lead us astray.

So we search for motivational techniques, discipline, structure, routine, willpower, affirmations, “law of attraction”, and productivity hacks in order to fix our deficiencies.

And then we beat ourselves up — think of ourselves as too lazy, too unskilled, too unmotivated — when we fall short of our goals and dreams.

This is such a big, steaming load of elephant manure that visitors to the International Space Station ought to be able to snap a souvenir photo of it.

If we want to reach the highest conceivable levels of human flourishing, then we can’t base our actions on this cynical, self-flagellating, self-defeating attitude.

Instead of judging ourselves and our actions as BAD and trying to motivate, discipline, & “positive think” our way out of our nature, we would be much better served trying to understand that nature.

Only then, can we structure our lives and environments in a way that will allow us to create permanent, positive change on a large scale.

This is Cracking The Happiness Code. It’s psychology, biology, anthropology, neuroscience, history, and philosophy in action...seasoned to taste with anecdotes about world travel, strange analogies, and the occasional limerick. Totally free from annoying ads, hidden sales agendas, and other marketing nonsense.

Who Am I?

My name is Andrew Walton, and the project you’re currently reading about is what I've decided to create with my life.

You see, from 2007 to 2010 I developed a series of health issues that would change my life forever: a chronic and severe repetitive strain injury in both arms as a result of my obsessive study of the guitar at university, leading into a cascading series of neuro-muscular issues that left me unable to talk for almost 2.5 years, in constant physical pain, and — at my lowest point — unable to work, drive, hold a knife and fork, and even needing to be pushed around the Chicago Museum of Science in a wheelchair.

As a 24 year old I had to ask myself a question no 24 year old should have to ask: What if my life is over? What if there will be no more laughing and joking with old friends, no more running on the football field and making diving touchdown grabs, no more guitars singing the blues. What if there’s no more hope of a career, my own home, or a family?

It was only through the incredible love and support of family and some wonderful friends that I made it through. And when I finally — unexpectedly — made a breakthrough in June 2013 and began to talk again, that I knew it was time to take my life in a different direction.

I had to stop abusing my body in order to try to make money. I had to stop preventing my own healing process. The cycle had to end, and it meant I had to choose love over money. I had to embrace my passion for writing, for learning, for language and communication, and for people, and use this powerful positive impulse to do my greatest work.

Because I knew I wanted to inspire people to see the beauty of this world.

I knew I wanted to show people that they could shatter their greatest obstacles and lead a joyous, passionate, fulfilling life.

I knew I wanted to break down barriers between people so we could build strong communities that work toward our collective goals.

And I knew I wanted to work harder than I ever had in order to make it all happen – because I loved what I do.

So I sold a bunch of my instruments, packed a small backpack with the essentials, and left home for...the world.

Eventually, my ideas coalesced into my purpose and this project: Cracking The Happiness Code.

Now, I spend 2-4 months living in different places around the world – on a shoestring and out of a backpack. It’s an amazing way to learn about how different people live, how they see the world, and how — despite 1000s of miles of separation, language barriers, and cultural divides, we are more similar than different.

Why Patreon?

Because I'm sick of playing this game where I do menial writing in order to "get by", while the area I'm passionate about - the area where I can contribute the most to the world - goes neglected (as I try to manage my ongoing health issues). I've decided to make Patreon my "salary" so I can devote my time and energy to something that actually matters: Cracking The Happiness Code.

Pledging Your Support

First of all, if you're not in a position to financially support CTHC - no worries! All the content you're used to getting will continue to be there and I'll continue writing as usual.

But the great thing about Patreon is that you can set your donation as low or as high as you want! If you have $2 to pledge, that's amazing! Every little bit helps me live my dream of making CTHC the most influential, insightful, inspiring, and entertaining resource possible.

So, If You Donate, What Cool Things Do You Get?

There's quite a bunch of awesome things that are available exclusively to patrons! They range from fun and unpublished side projects, behind the scenes looks at the site and community, Skype sessions, Q&A sessions, and more!

So scroll down, pick what works for you, and let the rewards start rolling in. And thanks for supporting Cracking The Happiness Code!
