I'm just going to assume that, if you've found your way here, you have some idea who I am and what I do. I write novels and short stories and, sometimes, comics. To date, I've written thirteen novels, and my short fiction has been collected in fifteen volumes. I'm also a two-time recipient of both the World Fantasy and Bram Stoker awards. I live and work in Providence, Rhode Island.

Since 1996, my fiction has been my sole means of income. It shouldn't surprise anyone that this often means that I'm just scraping by. Over the years, my readers have been tremendously supportive, above and beyond simply buying my published work, a fact I have never allowed myself to take for granted. Long before crowdsourcing was a thing, I experimented with a reader-funded monthly venue, Sirenia Digest, and it's been going strong since November 2005. In 2011, with the help of  photographer Kyle Cassidy, I crowdsourced a book trailer for my novel The Drowning Girl: A Memoir.

In short, with the continuing patronage of my readers, I have written stories and made art that otherwise would not exist.

Which brings me to the goal of this Patreon campaign.

Some people may be surprised to learn that, ordinarily, I sell a novel before it's written. Well, before most of it's written. I write three chapters and a synopsis, and then my agent sells the novel based on that. This gives me money from the advance to live on while I finish the book (which might take six months, or might take two years). However, there's a creative downside. I find myself having to write to an editor's expectations, as they rightly expect me to produce the novel that they've bought.

After thirteen novels, I'd like the opportunity to try it the other way round. I'd like to write a novel, start to finish, without anyone looking over my shoulder, free of the constant worry that I'll have strayed too far from the proposal. And when the book's done, I can deliver the manuscript to my agent (who's told me, again and again, how she wishes I'd try taking this route) and she can find it a home. A prospective editor will be able to judge the completed book, not a prediction of what the book might be. I believe wholeheartedly that the end result will be a better book, and, hopefully, a better book deal.

Beyond the rewards listed for each level of support, all backers will have access to occasional special Patreon-only updates, such as brief excerpts from the work in progress, photographs, and video clips.

I hope that you'll help me write the best novel that I've ever written.
