seerpea I had to use the YouTube version as I could not get an RSS feed going (for any of the last 3 shows, even though i had previously viewed prior 2) with Diamond or Weekster. Is there a different audio process used for YouTube from RSS feed? The voices were very muddled compared to the RSS feeds I was able to get the past month.

Galaxy Note 5, S6 Edge+ or WAIT??? 2FA Apps, Avoid This Win10 Upgrade Fail, Cool Off A Hot Router!

Both Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ have hit and are top-of-the-line. LG's G4 is another great option... but should you -WAIT- a few more weeks before you buy a new phone? Will Sprint and Verizion going 'contract free' save you money? Two Factor Authentication: Shannon talks Authy, Duo, and Google Authenticator. Will a new motherboard mean you have to pay for a Windows 10 license? Can you move Windows 10 off a HD and onto a SSD... and why you need to upgrade in place before you do a clean install. Keep heat from killing your router, an even cheaper tablet recco for kids, a free open source app for security cameras, and more!

Jon Hancock Additional info on Win 10 upgrade. This is specific to Dell, but may apply to others. Dell apparently encodes the recovery partition. If you clone the original HDD to an SSD the windows update will fail. I had to swap the SSD with the original HDD, performed the Win 10 upgrade, and then clone the upgraded HDD to the SSD. Works fine.

Matthew P Stein Take a hard look at the Saygus V2 and also consider that right now, only the Nexus 6 works with Google Fi, so if you are leaning towards trying "Fi" then your only choice is the Nexus 6. Saygus is a potential monster with 2 SD slots and 64 GB storage native, so you could potentially carry 464GB of storage in your phone..... (a part of me wants it just for that reason.....).

Eldergamer There are very few alarm systems that are free of monthly fees so when I came across the Smanos I had to try it. I purchased the Smanos alarm system. Like you I had trouble with it, enough trouble that I decided to keep looking. A friend was also looking at systems the same time I was. He purchased an alarm from a company called iSmartAlarm. First thing I thought was it has something to do with apple but it’s just one more a company jumping on the ‘I’something naming convention bandwagon. It has an app for both Android and IOS. Anyway, I used the Smanos for about a week. It never worked right. I simply couldn’t trust it, when it comes to alarms that just seems unacceptable to me. My friend seemed to be happy with his so I boxed the Smanos up and shipped it back to Amazon. I purchased the iSmartAlarm alarm system from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/iSmartAlarm-iSA3-Preferred-Package-Security/dp/B00ESVCRJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440611715&sr=8-1&keywords=iSmartAlarm It wasn’t perfect either. I had trouble with getting the system connected to the app for my phone. The remote is also not a very good design but after I fixed the phone issue I haven’t had any trouble. I’ve had no false alarms or technical hang-ups since. I’ve had it for about a year now and I don’t even give it a second thought. That’s exactly what I was looking for. Peace of mind. There may be better systems out there. I only have experience with the two mentioned above.

Julian Owens For those of us who are trying to run a small router / system in a garage, I have killed two with 100+ degree Texas heat, what can you guys recommend for a router or mini switch that can handle 100-110 degree F heat? Fanless would be nice but if it has a fan, that's ok too. Thanks again for all of your help.

August 19, 2015 15:20:00 · Reply

Shannon Morse and Patrick Norton Hey Julian! Patrick here. I'll ask folks on the show if they know of a particularly robust router, but I suspect if it's 100-100 outside, it's probably way hotter inside your garage. Any chance you can move that hardware into the house? If not, make sure it's not anywhere near a windows (direct sunlight is brutal), and try moving it down by the floor, esp if the floor is concrete. Consider cracking open the case on the router, drilling holes in the top, or just leaving it outside the case. Setting up a biscuit fan that blows air on/over it might help, or just keeping a fan going inside the garage to move the air around. And, of course, there's always sealing and insulating the roof the garage, adding ventilation to reduce the amount of heat buildup inside. Hope this helps a bit!

Hey Everybody! Greetings from Defcon, and thank you for making TekThing possible! Today's episode includes Intel's new Skylake Core i7-6700K: overclocking friendly on top of serious performance. (Want!) Can a $500 printer save you thousands? We tested one of Epson's new EcoTank printers to find out! Need a tiny way to share and back up files? We got hands on with the SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick. Is there a legal way to back up Blu-Ray discs? Windows 10 security paranoia might be FUD, but we’ve got privacy concerns! All that and more in TekThing episode 31! Be sure to head over to TekThing.com to get the RSS and iTunes links!

Julian Owens Hey guys, great shows. I just wanted to let you know that based on a most recent show where you covered the extension of your wifi signal, no I don't have horse hair in my walls, I was able to resolve my issue. I live in a long ranch home where my ATT router is in an upstairs above my garage and my master bedroom is aaall the way on the other side of my house. I picked up a Netgear EX6200 that I have placed in the middle of my home to carry the signal and now everything is just sweet. Thanks. I'll be getting me a supertank printer next! Great Job. Also, along with Proton mail there is also Tutanota - they both essentially do the same thing (end to end encryption) - your thoughts on them vs each other? I'm leaning towards Totanota because it has mobile apps for Android and iPhone. Thanks for the shows!! Longtime fan - MM, Los Angeles
