Earl D Yates Thanks Destin! While I hope that these Scientists are able to find a way to stop the spread of this disease, there are some far reaching implications. This is the first time that I've ever heard of a cancer that is contagious. If a strain of cancer can become communicable among Tasmanian Devils, there is a possibility that some strain of cancer could mutate and become contagious between humans. So, helping to find a cure for these rare critters may in turn, help to prevent a similar outbreak among the human species.

I reshot the autorotation video. I literally got in a helicopter and did an autorotation with a professional instructor. I think it will do a very good job of explaining it. I also went to Gordon's wedding. Thanks for paying for my plane ticket to Vancouver!

After watching all of the Smarter Every Day videos, I really wanted to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, so my wife and I drove from Atlanta to visit this past weekend. We also started listening to "Failure is Not an Option" on the way there, per Destin's suggestion. Thanks for the inspiration that turned into a great weekend :)

Maarten Daalder What is also amazing is that the Dragon capsule was sending telemetry after the breakup. It was suggested that if it had been the manned Dragon 2 capsule on top of the Falcon the humans inside could have opened the parachute and survive the explosion.

Some notes about this.

We each repeated the experiment 3 times, and got the same results every time. For those of you who might be skeptical, great! The good news is that right circularly prismatic kiddie pools are only $10 and you can do the experiment for yourself at your latitude. There's really no reason you shouldn't do this on your own, so before you criticize how we've done it, I'd strongly encourage you to do it for yourself.

Gordon McGladdery did all of the sound design for the video. We used two songs from other artists (licensed of course). Derek split the first one up so it fades from video to video, and Gordon split the instruments up on the second one. There are violins on one video and percussion on the other for example. It's really neat.

The neat earth animation at the beginning and the synchronizing timer was made by Michael Hannah of http://eisenfeuer.com/. He also made still images of the earth from the top and the bottom.

GET SMARTER SECTION:

There was a study performed at MIT years ago (http://web.mit.edu/hml/ncfmf/09VOR.pdf) that explained the physics involved. We repeated some of these demonstrations, but on opposite sides of the globe…and in a way that can be easily understood.
