Two-Hours And Forty-Three Minutes Of Music!

Hey you beautiful patrons, you!

Your friendly, neighborhood Mike TV here.  I was just writing to say hello, provide you this week's dose of music, and let you know what's gonna be coming up for the next few months.

As many of you might be aware, my financial situation is pretty dire at the moment.  I won't get into specifics but, alas, my release of True Crime Television on Bandcamp only took a small chunk out of the money I owe to my creditors. So, I am gonna be forced to take a day job for the next 4 to 6 months to replenish my coffers.  Which means that I won't have time to write music with the same sort of fecundity (I know, it's a bit of a poetic use of that word, but at the same time, not really) as I have over the past year.  I will, however, be able to provide one weekly Ustream show a week.  In fact, I have a link to one that I recorded last Friday.  I play almost 40 songs from every album I have released.  (Well, except Tumors.  I used those songs to sound check an hour before I started the recording.)

Now, I understand that this isn't what you signed up for.  So, if you feel that you must stop supporting me, I completely understand.  I hope to get back to the songwriting before long.  But, my bank account is so close to empty it might as well be so.  I owe hundreds of dollars and I don't expect to see any significant checks for another month and change.  So, I have to take drastic measures to tackle my drastic situation.

I hope you check out the show to see exactly what I am offering in exchange in the interim.  I played almost 40 songs, I played deep cuts and songs that have long been requested by fans.  I spent two days rehearsing, re-learning old tunes, and re-charting forgotten ones.  In addition to giving you a similar show each week, I am going to provide you with chord charts and lyric sheets to every album I have ever released.  I will give you one album a week.  Starting with the first and moving up to the last.  Once I have completed that project, I will then start recording YouTube videos, explaining how to cover each of the songs, played exactly the way I play them.

So, I know that you won't be receiving new music from me over the next few months.  But you will still continue to receive quality entertainment, I believe.  A show, along with chord charts and lyric sheets, and then, eventually, YouTube videos explaining how to play my music.  I hope that is enough to compel you to stick with me.  If not, I thank you for your support, heretofore.  I love you all.

The link below will take you to last Friday's show.

Itch, Itch, Itch - round 2

Hey, hey, you magnificent patrons, you!

I have four new songs for you this week.  Although, only two of them are keepers, and, frankly, one of them I am on the fence about.  But, I guess not everything I do can be amazing.  Actually, I am happy if a song is listenable after a couple listens.  Which, unfortunately, two of the songs this week are not.  Well, for me.

Also, the lyrics aren't that great.  In fact, I reserve the right to alter all of the lyrics on this album before finalizing everything.  I'm trying to write as a different person and it's proving to be a bit tough.   But, this gives you a pretty in-depth look at how my process works.  Typically, I write on either guitar or piano, and I frame out the lyrics and the melodies while composing the chord progressions.  Sometimes I'll write a whole set of lyrics only to abandon them days later, as is  the case with the song Day Drinking.  I like the melody, I like the progression but the lyrics suck.  And I need to add a lot more sonic variety to the tune.  So it's still a work in the progress.

I dig the Internet Is Down.  In fact, I'm sorta thinking that the whole gang vocal approach might be something that I might do for the whole record.  Not sure.  But anyway, I hope you dig the album as it is developing.  Again, this album is being written for my 19-year-old self.  I'm trying to put together an album that I would have loved back then.  *shrug*  You know, as an exercise.  Hopefully, not in futility.  :P

Thank you again for your continued support.  Love you all!  The link is below.

PURE UNBRIDLED ROCK!

Hey, hey, you magnificent patrons, you!

So, I have had a ton of fun this week putting together music for you. I am making a  garage rock/punk rock album. It's a complete concept record. Basically, there are four band members, all friends just out of high-school, and they put together a band called Anal Worm.  And they just saved a thousand dollars to go into the studio and record an album over a weekend.  And this is that record.

The members of Anal Worm are:

Empty Vee:  guitars and vocals

Thunder-Mutt:  bass

Jeremy: keyboards (the keyboard only has one working sound)

Smash: drums

These are, of course, completely fictitious people.  It's all me.  But I am basically working out the details of their lives to sort out the lyrics.  What they write about and why.  And I'm developing relationships between the band members to inform how they write their parts.  It's been super-fun.  I hope you dig it.  I think it just might be the most fun I've had since I moved to Austin.

Anyway, give it a spin.  Thank you for your continued support.  I love you all!

New Music, Old Fears, and Doom/Ruination!

Hey everybody,

So, I noticed that I lost a few patrons with last week's post.  Which really breaks my heart.  So, let me ask, should I not do the live-streaming shows?  I know that I was having some technical difficulties but I will sort them out in the upcoming shows.  I figured that a couple hours of live-streaming entertainment would be worth the pledge you all have committed to me, but if not, please, let me know.  I was working on recordings all last week, but I had two shows to prepare for, as well as band practice, not to mention getting this current Say It With A Bullet album into shape, as I want to have it ready for release by the end of this month.  I was hoping to have all 10 songs ready before I gave you guys anything, as I know I have iterated on a bunch of these songs in the past, but, I have included them in this week's posting because, well, they're basically all of the recordings I've been working on.  The other songs just aren't ready yet.

Okay, but please, allow me to wax poetic about losing patrons.

I think I might slowly be fading into emptiness.  Patreon's not a very good way for me to interact with my friends and fans.  I've had my most productive year yet, but I feel like the music is just falling on deaf ears.  That the music is just being cast, yet again, into the abyss.  I can't get the Grey's Anatomy people to listen to my new stuff.  So the possibility of a big infusion of cash is not gonna happen.  I can't seem to engage the fans.  I'm terrible at self-promotion.  My money is dwindling.  My career is disappearing.  My music goes unheard.  And I feel paralyzed.  What do I do?  I've never done anything but make music and make it all the time.  Produce, produce, produce and then, voila, good things have happened.  But right now, I just don't see what could possibly save me from doom and ruination.

Okay, ha ha ha!  So, that's basically all of my fears in a nutshell.  But, aside from money, which is a short-term and easily fixed solution, and aside from the fact that it FEELS like I'm not engaging with the fans, there are all sorts of indicators that suggest otherwise.  Such as, my streaming numbers are going up each month.  The whole music business is now shifting over towards streaming songs, and my song-streams are climbing.  That's a good sign.  Also, because I'm producing so much new music, when people who stream my stuff like one song, there's a high likelihood that they will find others that they will enjoy.  I will have about 12 albums out, maybe 13, by the end of the year.  And I only had 7 going into 2014.  That's a lot of available music for people to stream.  Albums that maybe they might not have otherwise purchased but now can listen to for free via streaming.  So, that's good.

The reason I wrote the above two paragraphs is I just wanted to give my patrons a look into what goes on in my brain.  This is the fear and doubt that I have to deal with all the time.  The balance of reasoning and irrational fear.  And when I lose patrons, it feels like I'm failing.  Like it's just another reminder that my music is fun but kitschy at best and mediocre to boring at worst.  But hell, they could have left for any reason.  Maybe they lost their jobs.  Maybe their credit-cards were compromised and they haven't installed the new one yet.  I mean, it might have nothing to do with me.  Or maybe it does.  Maybe they feel cheated that I didn't provide new songs last week.  But if so, I have to let it go.  And just keep on doing what I do.  Til the wheels fall off.  Til the the engine explodes, the paint cooks away, and I arrive wherever I'm going, in a fiery, burning chassis of love, doubt, fear, and, ugh of all ughs, hope.

Anyway, I wrote all this to let you know that when I don't have a lot to give you in a given week, it's not that I'm not doing anything.  I am.  I'm always working on music.  And I'm trying to figure out the best way to give you an insider's perspective on what I'm doing and how it gets done.  I really do love all the support you guys give me and have continued to give me.  Without you, frankly, and without Patreon, I think I might've, well, nevermind what might have happened.   But, see, I can't stand Facebook.  And Facebook definitely seems to be throttling my messages and announcements.  MySpace is dead.  And I just don't have the time or wherewithal to go seeking other avenues of social engagement.  And I'm certainly not ever gonna use ads.  Ewww.   So, it's you guys, my patrons, that fuel my engine.   Thank you so much.  I love you all.  I will try to do better.  I will try to give you more songs.  Better songs.  All the time.

With 3000 megatons of my love and admiration exploding on your faces,

M

The fourth week of June!

Hey everyone!  I just got done playing live via Usteam.   I have attached the link below for your viewing pleasure.  The guitar is mixed a little low for my taste but I will definitely sort that out for the next show.  I play a total of 19 songs over 2 hours.  I hope you dig it, if you get a chance to watch.

Additionally, I have been working on the Say It With A Bullet album all week.  I don't have any mixes for you just yet, because I am waiting on my bandmates to record their performances but we're getting pretty close.  Maybe next week, or the week after, I should have a brand new record for you.

Anyway, I love you all.  Thank you so much for your continued support.

Third Week Of June - Three New Songs!

Hey, everybody!  I think I need a little break from writing and recording, just to let the song-writing reservoirs replenish.  So, what I think I'm gonna do is focus on playing live for a couple weeks and I will put together a few live-streaming shows to close out the month with.  I will continue to write new stuff but I'm not gonna put any pressure on myself to deliver tunes, as I think I'm just sorta spinning my wheels at the moment.

The three songs can be downloaded by clicking the link below.   One of the songs, The Revolution's Over And They Won, is a bit of a bummer.  I was feeling pretty put out when I wrote it.  It seems like everything in this world, except for science, just keeps devolving into petulant, selfish, self-serving, grasping, vitriolic bickering.  And even as disconnected as I am, I still keep encountering people just being their typical, frustrating, selfish selves.  I mean, I'm talking about our leaders, and our celebrities, and major companies, and the news, and magazines, and the like.  It has nothing to do with the people in my life.  They're all sweethearts.  But, anyway, so I wrote The Revolution's Over as a reaction to all of the acrimony.

And the song, I Saw Jesus On South Lamar, is a sorta failed experiment.  I know I could go back to keep tinkering with the lyrics but I just sorta lost steam in the writing process.  Of course, because I'm obsessed with completing a song once I've started writing it, I finished it, but I intended for the song to be funnier and more arch than it ended up being.  And, by the end of it, I actually felt like Jesus did.  I just wanted to climb out the car without saying goodbye.  So, if you're interested in my process, this might be a bit of an interesting look.  But if not, I would suggest passing on it.  But that's just me.  Maybe you guys will love it.  I really can never tell which songs will resonate and for what reasons.

Anywho, I think I'm gonna do a live-streaming show this coming Sunday, during the day.  Probably around three-pm, so that way it's four-pm for the people on the east coast, and one-pm for people on the west, and hopefully that won't intrude too much on people's days.   I will provide the details when I post my song-offerings at the end of the week.

Love you all!  Thank you so much for the continued support!

M.

Four Songs Of Something For Someone!

Hey, bosses! So, here's the music I've been working this on this week. I'm still not 100% on every mix. I'm just tinkering with ideas, trying to differentiate this album from previous albums. If you have any thoughts, one way or another, I would really appreciate it. I took most of Thursday off as that was my birthday. But I still managed to make some changes to Fierce Butterflies. Anyway, I hope you dig the stuff. If you don't, please let me know why not. If you do, and there's something that you really love, please let me know too. So I can sort out if the production elements are things that I could work into the whole album. Thank you so much for your continued support. I love you all and I will have another four or five tunes for you next week. I might also iterate on these tunes as well, depending on the sort of feedback I get. Just fyi. Talk to you next week! M.

Jeff H Cost of Everything.. I'm in love with this song.. I would love to hear more songs like this. A haunting, depressing, song thats secretly a song about staying positive/survive, don't give up.. At least having kids myself, that was my take on the song…

Mike TV Thank you, gentlemen! I'm super-excited. I have 9 new ones for you this week. Jeff, thank you for the positive feedback on Cost Of Everything. That song would not have made the cut had it been left up to me. But I had a handful of patrons reach and let me know that the song HAD to be on the album. So, there it is. And, over time, it has really grown on me. :)

April's Music and Beyond!

Hey bosses, So, this month was a pretty prolific month for me. I completed the thirty Night Attack stingers, 15 complete demos, and I have a few other songs that are nearly complete. However, I think I need to change up exactly what I will be doing on a weekly basis. The issue for me is, because I have been so focused on writing new music, I'm not allowing myself any time to actually rehearse and play all of the songs I have written. So, I have written scores of songs that I don't really know exactly how to play. I want to start playing live, here in Austin and abroad, but I need to start rehearsing both the old and new stuff, as I have spent the past year not playing, not rehearsing, only writing. So, I'm gonna split my week up. I think I'm gonna start doing bi-monthly streaming shows. I'd love to get some feedback as to favorite streaming sites you might suggest I use. I'd like to also receive feedback from you, my bosses, on what songs you'd like to see played live. So I can figure out acoustic renditions for each of them, and work them into the set list for the streaming shows. I'm also gonna spend the next month doing full studio arrangements of the demos I have written since January. At some point, I need to give my songwriting and parts writing brain a break, so I'm figuring in June, I might take that month off, I'll do a streaming show every week, maybe alternating between Get Set Go and Katy and my new unit, Say It With A Bullet. Not sure. Katy and I will be completing our album over that month as well, so we'll still have a full new album for you. Anyway, it's getting a bit rambling, this letter. I'm sorry about that. I just wanted to let you know that I'd like to divide my time between writing new music and performing that music live. I hope you're cool with that. Just drop me a line and let me know what you think. Also, please let me know, if you are interested in seeing me play live, what songs you' d like to hear live. :) Oh, and I have included this month's entire output, minus the Night Attack stuff. Sorry, I wasn't able to sort out what this month's strongest songs were. Per the usual, every person that responded seemed to have different songs that really resonated with them. So, I figured, poop, I'll just give them all to you. Thank you for your continued support! Lots of love! Talk to you next week! M P.S. If you want the Night Attack stuff, just reach out to me via message or email (getsetgoer@gmail.com) and I'll shoot you a link to download all thirty tunes. :)

April 30, 2015 19:00:37

Mike TV Okay, everyone! So I've got a list of the songs that I'll be doing full studio arrangement on, per everyone's input over the past couple weeks. The list looks like this... The Love You Keep Fierce Butterflies Stumble On Cost Of Everything 3000 Megatons Of Love True Crime Television Misfortune Let It Come Down In A Different World Not So Good (@ Hanging Out With Myself) I Ain't Writing Poetry Let's Begin Again Something Worth Fighting For Comfy Bed If there's a song that you really, desperately want included on this list, please let me know. But, barring that, I'm gonna start fleshing these songs out next week. I want to differentiate this album from the most recent releases, and I'm not exactly sure how I'm gonna do that, but first I'm gonna clean up what I've got, get the guitars in great shape, re-record the vocals, and probably lay down some drums. I might also add some bass in the form of actual bass or I might include some low end piano lines. I'm not sure if i'll work on one song til it is complete or work on multiple songs each day, pushing them forward a little at a time. We'll see. But I'm actually more excited than I thought I was gonna be. It's always nice to have a full project in the formation. This, most definitely, is when I am at my happiest. Love you all! M.

Fourth Week of April - New Songs!

Dear bosses, This last week was a bit rough for me. I think I need a little break to allow my reserve of melody ideas to refresh. Songs that would normally take me two or three hours at least draw a bead on, you know, figure out the basic lyrical idea, melody, and chord progressions instead took me much, much longer. I also find that, from a lyrical perspective, I seem to be rehashing old themes. Which, is fine for the moment, but I do think I'm gonna go back through all my unreleased songs, find those that I think sorta drop the ball lyrically, and re-write some new lyrics. Sometimes, when I do this, it's amazing. Other times, not so much. but like any art, revising and reiterating is how one makes things better. That said, I do have four songs for you. The last one was written over Thursday and Friday of last week. It is a collaboration with S.A. Bach, who was hanging out with me in Austin this last week. Unfortunately, a couple of the guitars had some microphone issues that I am still sorting out, so, this version is sorta noisy, doesn't yet have lyrics, but it should give you an idea of the song pre-additional arrangements. It's a pretty if strangely shaped song. I'm gonna complete an iteration of the song for release at the end of this week but Sebastian and I intend to keep passing the files back and forth, adding and subtracting stuff until we get a mix we like. If this song goes well, we're hoping to collaborate on nine or ten more and put out an album sometime near the end of summer. If you don't know S.A. Bach's music, look him up here... https://sabach.bandcamp.com/album/defeat-lap-arguably-the-best-of-s-a-bach-2007-13 Everything he writes is amazing but this album is a good cross section of his various styles and lyrical genius. Okay, so, I love you all. Thank you so much for your continued support. I'm gonna complete a version of the collaboration with S.A., write two or three more tunes this week, and then start sorting out which tunes I will be doing full studio arrangements on. So please, at the end of this week, lemme know which songs, if any, are standouts, and add them to the list. With glowing, fiery-tipped alien probes of love, M.

This week's new tunes!

Hey everybody! Here's the newest batch of tunes. I hope you dig them. They're pretty spare but again, once I identify the top 10 to 12 songs of the past few months, I'll do full studio versions. Additionally, Katy and I are working on a new album and that should be done in the next month or so. Please do, if you find the time, let me know which songs resonate with you, as that will help me identify which ones to flesh out into fully arranged iterations. I think I'm gonna do two takes of each song. One stripped down, and one fully arranged. I might offer them as two separate collections or I might, instead, just take the best version of each and aggregate those. Again, all this will be decided predicated on your feedback. So, please stay in touch and let me know. Hope your Sunday is wonderful! I will talk to you all next week. With sparkly, diamond studded Underoos of joy, Mike TV

Ruffs! - 2nd Week of April!

Dear bosses, I have completed a new set of songs. There are five this week. I think there might actually be a couple pretty good tunes in this batch. It's hard for me to really determine what's good and what's not, so I offer them to you in the hopes that you'll give me a little feedback. If you have the time. I think I'm back on my song-writing game. I've been having a lot of fun writing songs lately. The ideas for new tunes and melodies is a little strained because I've written so many songs since last May. But, ever since I started standing nude under the full moon, drinking the blood of innocent children, and covering myself in bees for half an hour every day, the creative juices have really started flowing again. Thanks for that advice. I've decided that I'm gonna continue writing through April and come May, I will go back through all the songs written since January and start doing full studio versions of the best of them. Again, I have trouble figuring out what the best songs are, so any input from you would be wonderful. A handful of the songs this week definitely lean more towards the Americana sound that I've been working on, as I'm trying to get enough songs for Katy's and my new side-project, Say It With A Bullet. Katy really likes The Heart And The Head. If we add that to the album, we'll do it as a duet. Your thoughts would be most appreciated. Anywho, I hope you are well. I'll have those PTS reports for you by the end of next week. Have a wonderful weekend! With blazing, nuclear-tipped rockets of love, Mike TV

Night Attack's Movie Draft Musical Stingers by Get Set Go!

Hey everyone! So, this week I was the musical accompaniment for Night Attack's Movie Draft. What's Night Attack, you ask? Well, actually, most of you probably already know, but for those that don't, Night Attack is a live-streaming podcast where the hosts, Brian Brushwood and Justin Robert Young, spotlight the best of the worst of the Internet. It's ridiculous amounts of fun and I have had the good fortune to guest a few times on the show, both solo as well as with the whole band. And bi-annually, they have a movie draft. Think of it like a fantasy sports league, but instead of drafting players from sports teams, they're drafting all the summer blockbuster movies. The team whose movies perform best over the summer win. And they asked me to introduce each movie with a little musical stinger. They provided me the list on Sunday. There were thirty movies. So, I sat down all Monday and Tuesday writing little 10 to 20 second songs. I wrote the last one just minutes before heading over to the Night Attack studio. The show, as always, was tons of fun. But I was sorta out of my head trying to keep all the melodies, lyrics, and chord progressions together. I had a little cheat sheat, but even so, thirty different tunes in what amounts to 24 hours was pretty tough. Now, if you've never seen Night Attack, or its predecessor NSFW, then you might not be aware of the Chatrealm. It's basically between six hundred and a thousand (I'm guessing here) live viewers who all contribute to the show via a chat interface. It's always scrolling somewhere on the screen. And the Chatrealm are sort of a third host. They're pretty mind-blowingly incredible. They contribute jokes, and photoshopped images, and sound bites, and clips, and it's basically just a wonderful, chaotic storm of awesome, which is orchestrated by both Brian and Justin. So, one of the Chatrealm suggested that I record the songs and release it as an ep. Which is what I have done. I worked all day Wednesday and Thursday and the better half of today and voila! Here it is. If you want to see the live version, it is archived at nightattack.tv These are pretty rough demos but I think they're a fun collection. I watched each movie trailer before writing the song, so sometimes they're actually about the movie itself (e.g. Unfriended, Max), or about my personal reaction to the movie or movie premise (e.g. Poltergeist, Entourage, Pitch Perfect 2) or it's just some random joke that I thought would be silly (Mad Max, Ant Man). But I hope you like them. I had a great time writing and recording these. I will get back to my regularly scheduled song-writing next week and we're getting pretty close to the $150 a week mark, which means I'll start doing a live streaming show weekly again. :) Anyway, thank you so much! I love you all for your support. Hope you dig the music and I will talk to you next week! M. Oh, and sorry, I don't have any artwork for the album. :(

The Best Of March - 2015 - Demos and Ruffs

Hey, everybody! Fourteen songs were written in the month of March. All with varying degrees of arrangement. Some are just vocals and guitar, others have piano, background vocals, percussion, and more. I think there are some pretty strong songs in this bunch and I'm hoping to write another 12 to 15 songs next month. At which point, I'll start culling though the mixes over January, February, March, and April and start doing full arrangements of my and your favorites. So, please do let me know what songs resonate with you. You'll also notice amongst the songs from this month a couple songs for Katy and my side-project band, Say It With A Bullet. We're about 8 songs into a full album. As soon as we've got between 10 and 12 songs, we'll put out a record. We're hoping to play locally, so if you live in Austin, you're definitely welcome to come to shows. If there's a cover, lemme know that you'd like to go, and we'll put you on our list. But that's still a bit of a ways away. So, thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support. I hope you're happy with the music I have been writing. I love you all. M.

Get Set Go's complete collection!

Hey everybody! I'm just now running a promotion to try to increase my patrons on Patreon. I'm offering anyone that contributes at least 1 dollar a week the complete Get Set Go collection. (9 albums, 2 eps, 2 side-project albums, a total of 174 songs.) I don't think it is fair that I offer this to new patrons and not to you. So, if you currently pledge 1 dollar or more and would like the complete collection, just shoot me a message with your email and I will send you a link to download the music. Love you all! Thank you so much for your continued support!

Third Week Of March! - New Songs!

Hey True Believers! (Yes, I stole that from Stan Lee. Be thankful I don't use Excelsior at the end of this message. :P ) So this week was South By Southwest. My pal Ryen from Ozma was hanging out for a few days, and then we had some other friends from Palm Desert drop in. Palm Desert being the place where I spent my formative years. Forming. In a desert. So, this week was pretty tough for me time-wise. But I did manage to complete a few rough demos. And I have included them here for your listening pleasure. I think I'm gonna continue writing rough demos for the next few weeks and then, once I have about 20 songs, I'll go back and clean up about 10 of them. I'll make them full studio tracks, with full arrangements. So, if you have any favorites and want to hear a particular song fully fleshed out, just shoot me a message or comment in the comment section. I will also aggregate this month's songs at the end of the month, so for those of you who don't want to listen to them piece-meal can collect them all at one time. Also, I know I reached out to a handful of the 10-dollar-a-week patrons, because I wanted to get up and running on writing songs for them. Actually, In A Different World was one attempt at writing one of those songs but I don't think I really hit the mark, so I'm going back to the writing workshop, firing up the tesla coils, the lightning extractor, and the mouse-powered melody generator and gonna try again. So, please be patient with me. I'm finally getting back into the swing of writing new music again and should be back up to my old levels of output soon. I love you all. Seriously. It is your support that really energizes me to write new music. It's wonderful to know that I have people who are actively interested in the new stuff. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. Talk to you next week! Excelsior! (doh!) M.
