Studio jam with drummer Hans Hulbækmo!

This weekend I booked a day in Propeller Music Division here in Oslo, together with incredible drummer Hans Hulbækmo. I've always had this feeling that there's some interesting ground in synthesizers and acoustic drums yet to explore.

I was playing on the Analog Keys as a master, and I set up an Analog Rytm to act as an always in sync click track, and then the Continuum Fingerboard, with its unusually rich sound palette.

Mostly I set the tone first with a sound, perhaps a bass. Sometimes Hulbækmo started grooving before me, and then it was easy to tap sync the Analog Keys and jump right in. It was a truly interesting, and less chaotic than expected, experience. Definitely something I want to explore further.

I just recorded this one little peace on video. I think it's a nice example of what we were doing. For the next time though I think I'll try to prepare a little more, and perhaps rehearse a few times, and explore dynamics a little more. It's easy to end up in high energy land when jamming, but sometimes keeping it sparse and quiet can be really powerful.

I hope this can serve as inspiration for some of you. It was a really kick ass experience for me!

cheers

PS. I have absolutely no experience in mixing drums, so this is more or less the levels straight from the raw recordings, with some minor adjustments. Mixing multi track recorded drums I think I have to give to a professional mixing engineer for now :)

CUCKOO Thanks man! I've got 1:50 hours of audio recordings ;-) I might release something to listen to. It's all improv. And I think editing it a little bit will make it nicer to listen to. But the main reason I recorded it was both to try playing with Hans, and to record lots of drums that I can chop up, and use for future Cuckoo music. But the jams turned out so nice so I might consider releasing some tracks as well.

Analog Keys Multi Map Tutorial

The Analog Keys' keyboard can be split up into zones where you can play different sounds in each zones. One zone can be used for an internal sound, another zone could be playing an external synth, and a third zone could be playing an internal drum kit etc. A lot of people have asked how to set this up, so here, finally, I'm trying to break it down into (hopefully) easy to grasp steps.

I'm sure you can use it more creatively than what I'm doing here. But these are the basics. I hope you'll make use of it, if you've got an Analog Keys, or an Analog Four. It is possible on the Analog Four as well. You just have to find the menu in there first ;-)

OK, cheers for now!

Rozzle Brilliant Cuckoo! Multi Map works perfectly on the AnalogFOUR with an external MIDI keyboard as well. For those with A4 and external controller, simply set the Performance Channel to match the channel of your external keyboard, and it works like a charm (Global > MIDI CONFIG > MIDI Channels > Perf Channel). Since the A4 doesn't have the AK's dedicated "MultiMap" on/off button, the best way to turn off multi map on the A4 is to change the Perf Channel setting back to a MIDI channel you're not using (e.g. 8).

Olle Andersson Thanks Cuckoo! I am an AK user and I find it somewhat confusing with all the concepts of kits, projects, sounds, patterns etc. I guess it has its own logic but I dont see it yet :) So I would love a video on how you simply go about making a song from scratch and how you think about things like sounds, kits, projects and where to save this and that, where to start and so on. Of course this can be done in a dozen of ways but I think you know what I mean. Would be much appreciated. Thanx again!

KIKO BATO, song by This I Heard

This weekend my friend This I Heard came to visit me in Norway, all the way from L.A. We hadn't met for 10 years, and were so in the mood for finally jamming together!

Eventually we recorded a version of her (until now secret) song KIKO BATO.

And this is the outcome :)

As many of you can hear, I'm playing the OP-1 (and only the OP-1).

In the video I'm playing a drum kit. And afterwards I layered a track with the string synth, an FM solo and a bass sample sound on top of this.

As you can see I also got a new microphone that I'm in the process of learning how to use. It's a Shure SM7b. I think I will keep it, but I'll have to learn how to process vocals better, to make them sound natural and effortless.

This I Heard usually sounds completely different.

For more about her, check out her SoundCloud page:

Cheers for now

Live Jam Preview of new "No Filter" patches

Hello,

I've started to work on a collection of new patches for the Analog Keys. This time I want to explore rhythmical sounds, percussions and new types of keyboard sounds where I'm not using the filters.

The philosophy behind this is that I think the use of filters can sometimes hide otherwise lovely raw synthesis. There are ways to make soft sounds without the filters, and then you get to keep the rich overtones too! Mainly it's happening with the feedback and AM stuff.

So here's a little jam where I'm using a lot of these new sounds. It's one of those jams where I build up everything from scratch in one take.

I'm using stuff like Multi Map Mode, for the drums; Performance modulation for all of the tracks to make variations, Quantize, Swing etc. Also making frequent use of the reverb.

I know I just posted a video yesterday, but I haven't done any music for all summer, so I'm practially bursting with musical needs. I hope you don't mind ;-)

Cheers!

Homeless Balloon Nice! I love the courage you show when jumping into creating a tune without any safety net! The main reason why I chose the Analog Keys (I also have the Rytm and MonoMaschine), was the quality of the raw sound. I picked it instead of the Prophet 12 and Pro2, which both have digital oscillators. The analog quality of the A4 and Analog Keys is so inspiring. Thanks for this tune!

Hey all Cuckoos and Cookies out there.

With the support of all of you faithful supporters, and all of you newcomers who have chimed in the last month, I feel like you've managed to push me half a year ahead of my own imagination! I'm flat out, very humbly, bowing my head in a big:

THANK YOU!

YOU ALL ROCK!

If you don't feel like I'm pushing out videos and music fast enough, please be patient. I still have to finish this big project in 2015 (an animated short) before I can go totally CUCKOO. (It'll probably be ready by february 2016). But be sure, I'm gearing up for a total shift in focus when this project is nearing completion.

But here's something that's happening much sooner. I'll have an OP-1 pack ready by the end of July. Mostly tuned DBOX patches, and some OP-1 drum kits sampled from Analog Rytm. So there's something to look forward to :)

Cheers for now!

Jamming out a tune on the fly

Hello Patron friends!

Thank you all newcomers for joining in the last couple of weeks! Deeply thankful! All the small donations add up, you know! It's really helpful. So thank you!

Here's a little jam using the Analog Keys and the Analog Rytm to jam out a tune, and make a live performance. I'm gonna play on a sort of conference tomorrow. I'm afraid it's not gonna be covered by any media, so I thought I'd share some of my preparations, at least :)

My thought with live improvs is to prepare a few great kits in advance. Kits that I know really well. Full of Performance Mode changes and Joystick action. Since I'm very much a melody guy, I need to focus a lot on the keyboard, not making full potential of the Rytm. But just muting and unmuting the Rytm tracks is very helpful in making things move a bit :)

If there are any questions about how i set this up, or anything, don't hesitate to ask right here, ok.

Cheers for now.

Programming acoustic drum samples (snippet)

I've been thinking for a long time to use more samples of acoustic drums. Synthesis is totall cool and all, but sometimes the sound of a recorded acoustic drum is just what I've been looking for. This is just a little snippet on my SoundCloud, a little test, a nothing, that I tried out. Although I wanna use the Octatrack and Rytm more, when creating long arrangements you shouldn't disregard the use of a DAW as "uncool" or anything. The strength of a DAW is to do long and precise compositions, where the strength of a drum machine or a sampler is the power of in-the-moment performances. This little snippet is created in Logic with some free download high quality drum samples. /CuCkOo

Top of the line audio, beautiful design, precise build quality and incredibly fun to play. Soulsby Synthesisers is a small company emerging out of London with an 8-bit synth platform called the Atmegatron. The shape shifting nature of the transformers is a good analogy for what this can do. You can send different versions of the firmware into the machine, and slap on a new front panel and voilá, you have a new synthesiser! There's a dedicated 8-bit model, with great retro sounding sounds, a drum synthesiser that's really messy (in a cool way) amongst others, and the latest being an 8-bit ARP synthesiser! Elektron Overbridge Demo!

Elektron finally showed us their Overbridge VSTi plugin! It's coming out as a public beta in May - followed closely in early summer with a sharp release. And there are even more functions lined up for later this year. Overbridge is a VSTi plugin for your computer (OSX and Windows) that can control, edit and sync your Elektron Analog machines, such as the Analog Four, Analog Keys and the Analog Rytm. I'm sure they're very nervous about releasing it into the wild. As Cenk is mentioning in the demonstration, there are so many different configurations out there.. and they wanna make sure it works great on as many setups as they can think of. What do you guys think? How would you make use of this?

CUCKOO I think Live is where most of their user base is at. But it'll work in a more traditional DAW too, like Logic and Cubase.

BASTL Instruments Modular "Rumburak" is a beauty!

BASTL Instruments have been really busy this year, creating a lot of modular synthesizer modules. This setup they're calling "Rumburak", a Check Republic folklore magician :) In this video Vatslav from BASTL is telling us about Rumburak and the different modules, what's digital, what's analog, how their assemblyline is more like a collective than a traditional factory amongst other things. BASTL is a really interesting symthesizer developer, with a voice of their own, always crafting things that are truly unique. Just look at the way they solved sub-notes in their step sequencer. Brilliant yet super simple. Once seen, you gotta wonder why this isn't a standard seen in all step sequencers. I hope you enjoy this video! More coming! PS. I'm having wifi trouble here at Musikmesse. It just doesn't work.. I'll try to find a more reliable wifi somewhere and upload the rest of the videos.

Octatrack Tutorial #1

Hello everyone. I had my Octatrack for half a year now, and although I don't know it inside and out, I've been meaning to make a tutorial for a long time. So here it is! This is meant to be a tutorial for newcomers, to help get going. But perhaps there's something for more seasoned users as well? I don't know :) I just hope it'll be helpful for those of you who fear the Octatrack. It's nothing to fear! It's quite fun! Ok cheers for now! CUCKOO

Foot Pedals for Analog Keys, Softstep 2, Tutorial.

Hey, I've been thinking about this for a long time, and finally I just went ahead and did it. Foot Pedals for the Analog Keys is just begging to be explored! Many keyboard players, myself included, at least want a sustain pedal sometimes. And one really versatile foot pedal board is the Softstep 2, by Keith McMillen. It can be configured to send all sorts of MIDI. In this tutorial I'm going through how to pair the two, and create a set of foot pedals to do sustain and modulations. The rest is up to you. What I failed to mention in the tutorial is that I boosted the sensitivity of the Softstep, which I found to be much more natural especially when you're sitting down. Perhaps when standing, you want it to be less sensitive? I'm not sure. Anyways. I hope someone will find this helpful! Cheers! /CUCKOO

I Won't Forget About You - love song embryo

Hey cookies and wookies! I've been fiddling with synth patches in the evening, this week. Today was the ultimate test: Does it sound good with vocals? So I made a song sketch embryo. And I think it sounded much better than I had hoped, so I'm sharing it with you. If you like it, download it and play it for the crush you had in play school ;-) I hope you like it. ø------------ - - - - - - - - Technical info: Analog Keys: Bass, melodic loops Analog Rytm: Rhythm and filtered piano chords (Both recorded on one track.) Continuum: Slide harp solo (Harp patch) Voice recorded with a Røde NT3, through Ultra Voice Pro (only using preamp), and through a T.C. Electronic Triple-C multiband compressor. A bit of Logic Pro X compression on the vocals. Some high shelf lift on the master EQ, and a slight levels boost with an Adaptive Limiter on the master.

My biggest question with the Continuum Fingerboard was "How does it mix with other synths?". It's a different world, but it certainly adds something unique to the mix. It mixes great!

Continuum Elektrons

After getting the Continuum Fingerboard I was very curious of how it sounds with other synths, because it sounds so different! How does it mix? I finally got around to make a little tune with my Continuum and the Analog Keys and Rytm - just to see how they sound together. And I like it! I think the Continuum adds something truly unique to the sound. This is definitely something I will explore further. To play a melody on the Continuum to the sound of a synth with keys, I need to stay focused to stay in tune. Some sounds are so sensitive that they require hours of practise. And other sounds are easier to play. Download the song right here, or over at Soundcloud if you wanna keep it. PS. I'm also working on an Analog Keys/ Four patch pack. Some of them you can hear in this tune. Almost all of the patches are designed to be nice and responsive for keyboardists. But of course they can be sequenced on the four as well. There are about 40 patches. I'm thinking of releasing them as two versions. One where they are mixed as solo instruments, with full and body sounds. And another version, or perhaps a series of kits, where they are designed to have a specific role in the mix, cutting away frequences, adding frequencies to fit better together. More soon. Cheers CUCKOO

CUCKOO Thanks mate! That's really nice of you to say.. I always think I'm having trouble separating sounds from each other, and getting lost in the mix. But I guess I'm my own worst critic.

February 21, 2015 15:01:31 · Reply

Mark Harris nice sounds :) do you always play with 'rounding' off ... thats quite a challenge. on my soundplane I tend to use note quantisation, I can cope with it off for monophonic lines, but I find it really hard to play chords with it off. I love the sound of the continuum, its got this 'natural feel' to it, really helped by the fantastic Eagen Matrix.

February 21, 2015 14:14:31 · Reply

CUCKOO Hey thanks! Yeah the sounds on the Continuum are one of a kind. It's truly special. Most of the time I'm playing with rounding turned off. It's difficult, but it's where I feel the potential lies. It's where I want to improve. With percussive sounds though, I mostly turn rounding on. But as you're saying, it's really difficult to play clean with rounding off. I need loud and clear monitoring, with no latency, to adjust really fast - and when playing in a mix like this, it's really difficult. And especially when playing with other tuned instruments, like any well tempered keyboard, it's a tough test to pass :) I think it works best when there aren't too many tracks. Like just 2-3 tracks.

Hey everyone, I thought I'd just post this (no pledge) to let you know that I'm having a great time with my new Monomachine! It's just a little run through of my early experiments with this machine. Perhaps it'll spark some inspiration? :-) So far people seem very positive, and I've got some suggestions of a tutorial covering the voice synth in particular, as well as a full tutorial. Even though ten years old, perhaps there's still need for a proper cuckoo tutorial on the Monomachine? What do you think? /C

CUCKOO Yeah I hear you about the Octatrack. I still haven't sat down properly with it. Since it's based on samples, I need to find a sample based workflow that makes sense for me, and is fast to set up, and get going with. I don't have a library of beats or recordings - so I need to make sure the workflow is making total sense for a guy like me, who likes to create things from scratch.

So far we've met and played only a handfull of times, but we like it so much, and we think we're in total synch with each other – so we've decided to try and book some duo gigs. And here's a promo teaser video that we put together from our last performances in L.A. So if there's anyone of you who's got an idea of a venue, or a festival where you think we should play. Or perhaps you know someone that knows someone? What do you think? Any tips, suggestions and shares are welcome. Cheers for now.

Prophet 12 walkthrough, and patch demo/ jam

Dave Smith had a pretty large booth, and I didn't get to play around with all of the synths. But one synth that I tried was the pretty awesome Prophet 12. Carson Day from Dave Smith Instruments, talked me through the basics of the signal path, and also helped out filming me when I was playing around with the different preset patches. I think it clearly bears the mark of a digital synth, with the crisp, clear sounds. The analog filters certainly liven it up a fair amount. The only thing I felt was a bit of a downer was the distortion, being too "digital" and "flat" sounding in my ears. I wish it had been analog instead. But that being said, a lot of the both warm, and crystal clear timbres coming out of the Prophet 12 felt really nice. I can see why it's on top of many people's lists :)
