Hi and welcome to our PATREON page! If you like RPGs, please take a moment to read through our page and check out our project Valiant Souls and how you can be a part of it.

Vine, Lucius, Ors and Cain - the four aspiring knights we meet at the beginning of Valiant Souls. Not yet do they know the tragic fate that awaits them...

What is Valiant Souls?

Valiant Souls is a classic 2D RPG strongly building on it's characters, world building and a unique character development system.

The idea to Valiant Souls dates back over 10 years and stuck with us all this time, which is why we decided to use all the time, energy and resources we have to make it a reality. The current version is developed with a tool called RPG Maker MV, and we are building all assets originally ourselves starting with battle graphics, character sprites, animations or music, many of which you can check out on this page. Other assets such as tile sets, we buy from amazing creators all over the world or build them ourselves as well.

Some of the monsters Mario designed for Valiant Souls.

Currently we heavily focus on creating assets for the game, scripting the first events and making sure the story feels right, working on things such as balancing and making sure we get the foundations for our game right.

What makes your game worth supporting?

To be completely honest, Valiant Souls will not revolutionize the RPG genre. But we do think that it is a special game with a clever and motivating system both for battles and character development, and Valiant Souls is built on a rich lore with lots and lots of things to discover in the game apart from the main story line.

In Valiant Souls you will find side quests that open up completely new and large dungeons you never have to visit during the main game if you don't like, every NPC has a name and some sort of background and something interesting to say, and there is lots of interaction among the group, as well as between the characters and the world.

Long story short, Valiant Souls is a game built with passion, effort and love for story and characters, without ignoring that an RPG also needs to have challenging battles and things to find, unlock, complete and master. A lot of work has gone into it already, and a lot more will follow.

The game system

As you can see in the screenshot below, Valiant Souls uses a command-based turn battle system like many other games, but spices it up with what we call the "Soul system" in which each characters' battle morale (or "soul") has a direct effect on the strength of their weapon attacks and also adds certain advantages (buffs) and disadvantages (status ailments) depending on how high or low the characters' Soul Gauge is.

For example a character with over 60% Soul will enjoy 25% resistance against all elements, while a character whose Soul drops to 0% will not be able to recover HP, receive 25% more damage from elemental attacks and will need twice the usual cost to cast Magic. (never go to 0%, guys)

The idea is that the players need to find a balance between using Soul to unleash certain attacks or skills with effects that help them in particular situations, while being careful enough to not let the Soul Gauge drop low and risk devastating disadvantages. And while a normal battle against two forest snakes might not need that much tactical thinking, the boss fights will make heavy use of this system.

Also the character development system called "Soul Tree" is a vital part of the game system as well. For each character, the soul tree is divided into 8 emotions (doubt, rage, confidence, enthusiasm, joy, empathy, regret and sorrow) which each hold a number of skills to learn, depending on how strong that particular emotion is present in their personality. Certain emotions are available from the start, while others need to be unlocked by proceeding in the story or fulfilling certain quests that reveal that emotion in a character.

This means that character development is directly linked to the story and players will be able to experience the characters' emotional development through this system as well.

Right now we are using a modified version of Yanfly's skill learning plugin that we have spiced up so ability points can be distributed among the several branches (emotions) of each characters Soul Tree and players need to decide which skills to learn first, which branch of the Soul Tree they want to develop stronger or just grind and fight monsters for hours to simply unlock everything.

Vine has three emotions unlocked from the start of the game, each holding a variety of skills (passive and active) to learn depending on how prominent the emotion is in his personality

At some point we will replace this UI with a completely new original one.

Who are you guys?

Mario, the original creator of the idea to Valiant Souls, is an Austrian industry professional working on casino and slot games as an animator and graphic designer for over 10 years. He has been drawing since he can remember, has contributed several works to the manga magazine BOAH! and also is a self-learned but skilled composer, with some of his works implemented in casino games all over Europe.

Rene is Mario's childhood friend and after working for several years at Nintendo responsible for the translation of games like Xenoblade Chronicles or The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, he moved on to become a producer for Japanese game developer Spicysoft, bringing two of his games called チャリ走DX2 and チャリ走DX3 to the No.1 spot in the Nintendo eShop ranking in Japan. Now, Rene is working in video marketing and lives in Taiwan with his wife and son after spending seven years in Tokyo.

Do you really need money to finish the game?

Simple answer - no.

Currently, we are working on a demo version of Valiant Souls that includes the first 3~4 hours of the story and every bit of the game system that will be in the actual game as well, meaning an original battle and skill system, UI (we really don't like the default RPG Maker UI, and I am sure you also don't) and character development system, many of which involve hours of scripting and designing graphics, sprites, illustrations, or asking experienced MV developers for help.

We can do all of it ourselves (and if we need to, we will) but we also want to give back to the amazing plugin developers whose plugins we use in the game, purchase assets such as original or customized tile sets, and many other things, so e.g. we are supporting Yanfly with this account.

The Patreon account is a way for our closest friends to support us and also a way for us to share our progress and stay motivated, but you are welcome to contribute anything you like to our project - we'll be more than grateful for any kind of support.

What is your goal?

For now, we want to finish a first prototype version of the game with roughly 3 to 4 hours of game play to introduce the story, some major characters and be able to see if all the things we imagined actually turn out to be as awesome as we think they are.

For that reason, our Patron tiers mostly revolve around this prototype version of the game, however this does not mean we're not going to continue working on the game after that first version is finished. We think one step at a time, and finishing the prototype will be hard enough, so that's what we are focusing on right now.

We really appreciate every help we can get, and we hope that we can create an epic and fun RPG for you to play!
