What is Valiant Souls?

Valiant Souls is a classic 2D RPG strongly building on it's characters, world building and a unique character development system.

The idea to Valiant Souls dates back over 10 years and stuck with us all this time, which is why we decided to use all the time, energy and resources we have to make it a reality. The current version is developed with a tool called RPG Maker MV, and we are building all assets originally ourselves starting with battle graphics, character sprites, animations or music, many of which you can check out on this page. Other assets such as tile sets, we buy from amazing creators all over the world or build them ourselves as well.

Currently we heavily focus on creating assets for the game, scripting the first 3~4 hours of story and making sure everything feels right, working on things such as balancing the foundations for our game.

What makes your game worth supporting?

To be completely honest, Valiant Souls will not revolutionize the RPG genre. The game heavily focuses on it's characters and their development and interaction, and we think that it is a special game with a clever and motivating battle and leveling system, built on a rich lore with lots of things to discover apart from the main story. 

You will find side quests that open up completely new and large dungeons, every NPC has a name, some sort of background and something interesting to say and the world itself is built with many little details for you to discover or ignore - whichever you prefer.



This is how the battle screen currently looks. All the assets, including the numbers or HP bars, icons and monsters are 100% original. Still need to work on that background... :D 

Long story short, Valiant Souls is a game built with passion, effort and love for characters, without ignoring the fact that an RPG also needs to have challenging battles and things to find, unlock, complete and master.

The game system

Valiant Souls uses a command-based turn battle system spiced up with what we call the "Soul system" in which each characters' battle morale (or "soul") has a direct effect on the strength of their attacks and adds certain advantages or disadvantages depending on how high or low your characters' Soul Gauge is. Players will need to find a balance between using their Soul to unleash certain skills while being careful enough to not let the Soul Gauge drop too low and risk devastating disadvantages.

And while a normal battle against two forest snakes might not need that much tactical thinking, the boss fights will make heavy use of this system. 

The character development system called "Soul Tree" is the second vital part of the game system, in which each character can learn skills and improve their stats in 8 skill trees based on emotions (doubt, rage, confidence, enthusiasm, joy, empathy, regret and sorrow).

Each emotion skill tree holds a number of things to learn, depending on how strong that particular emotion is present in their personality. This means that certain emotions are available from the start, while others need to be unlocked by proceeding in the story or fulfilling certain quests that reveal that emotion in a character.

Who are you guys?

Mario, the original creator of the idea to Valiant Souls, is an Austrian industry professional working on casino and slot games as an animator and graphic designer for over 10 years. He has been drawing since he can remember, has contributed several works to the manga magazine BOAH! and also is a self-learned but skilled composer, with some of his works implemented in casino games all over Europe. 

Rene is Mario's childhood friend and after working for several years at Nintendo responsible for the translation of games like Xenoblade Chronicles or The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, he moved on to become a producer for Japanese game developer Spicysoft, bringing two of his games called チャリ走DX2 and チャリ走DX3 to the No.1 spot in the Nintendo eShop ranking in Japan. Now, Rene is working in video marketing and lives in Taiwan with his wife and son after spending seven years in Tokyo.

Do you really need money to finish the game?

Simple answer - no. 

Currently, we are working on a demo version of Valiant Souls that includes the first 3~4 hours of the story and every bit of the game system that will be in the actual game.

We are doing this all by ourselves, but we also want to give back to the amazing creators whose plugins we use in the game, purchase assets such as original or customized sprites or animation, and many other things, so e.g. we are supporting plugin developer Yanfly with this account. 

The Patreon account is a way for us to share our progress and stay motivated, and you are welcome to contribute anything you like to our project - we'll be more than grateful for any kind of support.

What is your goal?

For now, we want to finish a first prototype version of the game with roughly 3 to 4 hours of game play to introduce the story, some major characters and be able to see if all the things we imagined actually turn out to be as awesome as we think they are.
