Welcome to the Viking Age.

We are a little podcast dedicated to telling the stories of the Men and Women who lived through the Viking Age - with a special focus on those Scandinavians who went a-Viking. We explore what they did, why they did it, and why we can still learn from events which happened 1200 years ago today. After all, thing change but they don't change.

If you want to learn a little bit more about the Viking Age - Read On! If you want to learn how your contribution will help us share the story of the Viking Age - Read Further On! Or, if you'd just like to listen to the damn thing already - here's a link!

The Viking Age You Say?

Beginning around 800 CE, groups of farmers from Norway, Denmark and Sweden began to climb aboard their sleek, dragon-prowed long ships and cast off on journeys which would take them hundreds and thousands of miles from their homes.

Along the way they explored lands and encountered peoples previously unknown to Europeans, encountering cultures ranging from the Abbasid Caliphate of the Baghdad to the Inuit of Newfoundland. They raided churches and monasteries and returned home laden in gold and silver. They established and expanded trade networks stretching from Iceland to Byzantium.

Some of them conquered and settled in the new lands they encountered. Others used the riches and reputation they acquired abroad to forge kingdoms for themselves at home. Most of them gladly pocketed the profits from raiding and trading and then settled down to get married, farm their land, raise their children and boast of their exploits at feasts.

This podcast is dedicated to telling the stories of these women and men. If this sounds like a story that interests you - Why don't you consider helping us tell it?
