About

Since 2012, The Volcano has been publishing news for working-class and Indigenous peoples across British Columbia, Canada. We cover on the ground struggles against colonialism, capitalism, and imperialism, connecting leaders, strategies, tactics, and lessons across communities.

The Volcano is a place where oppressed people can write our own histories: where we can document our grassroots work, reflect on our relationships to each other, and continue to develop a political consciousness informed by our struggles. We see theory and practice as indispensable to each other, and loathe how theory has become dominated by professionals and academics who are paid to think. We want to reunite the production of political knowledge with the communities that are making politics through their everyday struggles, and produce alternatives to capitalist and colonial social relations in our day-to-day lives. The Volcano is a platform for working class and Indigenous communities to arise as theorists of our own struggles.

In addition to news, we publish short and long theory articles and archival pieces. In the past year, we've covered Indigenous and working class resistance in tent cities across BC, fightbacks from low-income tenants facing mass evictions in Burnaby, migrant worker organizing in Hong Kong, as well as pieces that theorize the revolutionary potentials of subject positions that are often disregarded and overlooked in mainstream media, such as urban Indigenous people, trans women, and homeless people.

Your donations help us cover the costs of our monthly print issue, which we distribute to low-income, racialized and Indigenous community spaces that are on the analog side of the “digital divide.” Our editors and writers are all unpaid. Thank you for your support!

The Volcano editors are all active in community self-defense campaigns in cities and towns throughout southern British Columbia: our journalism is rooted in, informed by, and accountable to the communities we organize alongside and in solidarity with. We are affiliated with the anti-capitalist and anti-colonial political group, Alliance Against Displacement.

The Volcano is published from our base in north Surrey, British Columbia, occupied Stó:lõ territories of the Kwikwetlem, Qayqayt, Kwantlen, and Katzie First Nations.

**Please note that Patreon charges in US dollars, so if you are using a Canadian bank account, you'll have to follow the exchange rates that we've outlined in the donation tier descriptions (ie if you want to give $10 CAD, input $7.50 USD as your donation).**
