For years, I lived with anxiety.

Nobody else knew. I lived, worked, dated, and even did standup comedy, all while I was internally falling apart.

Through a series of unusual events, I discovered how to manage my brain better. Afterwards, I wrote a funny book and did a successful comedy TED talk—all about anxiety and the physics of custard.

Now I give humorous-helpful talks about mental health to schools, businesses, universities, conferences, and wherever else I am invited*. I want to help everybody to be open, and to better manage thoughts and emotions. It's amazing what rambly stories, silly jokes, and badly drawn graphs can achieve.

* much like a vampire, I require invites, and don't like looking in mirrors

BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM

(Actually, I have many! But let's focus on one.)

Many schools and charities would love to have me speak to their students or at their events. However, many places lack the funding to make it possible. And, as much as I'd like to, I can't afford to offer my time for free.

(Each event takes at least two days away from other work—to prepare and perform.)

This makes me sad. This work is important and I'd love to do it more often. Many of us struggle with anxiety or depression at some time in our lives, and yet most don't realise how common it is.

I want to use humour to help a wide audience to understand and manage their mental health.

So... I wondered if there were people who would like to support me. With your help, I can offer these events for free to these schools and charities who are otherwise unable to pay.

And the plan goes further...

---

This is very much an experiment, and I'm sure things will change as events develop!

Initially, I plan to start simple: offering as many free event slots as the budget allows.

But I'd also like to create resources to share more widely. Partly this'll be out of necessity—there'll be times when, say, schools are closed or on exams, and I won't be able to fill the budgeted speaking slots for that time.

And I'll use that opportunity to create awesome mental health content. I already write about mental health, but I've long dreamed of being able to justify devoting proper time* to creating YouTube videos or podcasts or interactive web experiences, and more.

* like, longer than the measly hour I spent creating the deliberately imperfect** video for this page

** why deliberately imperfect? To force my brain to get over the fear and vulnerability of crowdfunding
😅 Instead of trying to prove my anxiety wrong by being perfect (which, if I'm honest, I find quite difficult to achieve), I find it easier to demonstrate to myself that being imperfect is rarely the actual end of the world.

What I'm saying is this: I'll take your support seriously, and there'll always be something to show for it—whether live events or online content.

And, of course, if you support me, you'll have a say in the direction this grows in! Together we can build amazing resources for anxiety and mental health.

---

As I hinted above, launching this site is difficult for a recovering perfectionist like me. Everything has to grow and develop organically.

But I know this for sure: I'll be ludicrously grateful for your support, and will do my best to create useful content for you and the wider community, as well as meeting my initial goal of serving the schools and charities who need support.

I'll regularly seek your input, send you amusing stories, and together we can refine the plan as we go.

Thanks for reading <3

Tiers
Custard Hero
$5 or more per month
  • Wow! You're helping school children and others learn about mental health. You'll receive updates on events as they happen.

(To clarify: I mean events which I speak at due to your support, NOT every event which happens globally. I don't think either of us would enjoy that.)

Custard Walker
$10 or more per month

  • Access to my patron-only feed, for news and stories. Perhaps they'll be funny, or thought-provoking, or informative, or inspiring.

Custard Cream
$20 or more per month

Everything from the above tiers, plus:

  • Irregular sneak previews from work-in-progress novels and comedy routines which never get performed.

(This might actually be terrible. But if you enjoy witnessing the creative process, you might find it fun!)

Custard Master
$50 or more per month

Wow! This is an amazing level of support.

Everything from the above tiers, plus:

  • The option to beta-read selected chapters from upcoming books

(I have other ideas here, but I'll chat to the first few people to support me at this tier, and we'll revise this together :) )

Purest Ambrosia
$100 or more per month

I'm lost for words! You really really want to help people hear about managing anxiety.

Everything from the above tiers, plus:

  • Lots of gratitude & extremely warm feelings
  • Maybe we can hang out in Skype or Google Hangouts and chat about life and happiness and things.
  • Or perhaps I can help you polish up and edit some of your own work.

If anyone is generous enough to support my work at this level, I'll be in touch and we'll figure out something that works in practice from the above list, and I'll revise this afterwards.

Goals
