rabble has been a fixture of alternative media in Ireland now for over 5 years now. During that time we have put out 14 deadly print issues, distributing well over 100,000 free papers across this septic isle and beyond. We’ve done plenty more on our website and used our huge online following to spike current affairs and lent our social reach to dozens of grassroots campaigns and events. Most recently we’ve stepped into high impact video content.

rabble is now at a stage where we need to evolve or die. For a long time, we’ve been a razor toothed minnow in the broader swamp of what passes as media on this septic isle. We’re punch proud of carving out a space for ourselves with a dogged tenacity and if our recent survey told us anything, it’s that you lot really, REALLY value what we do and want us to keep her lit.

Yet on the inside, the project’s hit an impasse. We want to maintain ground gained, bring new people on board and up our game as media makers - we want the freedom to take on new challenges. And fundamentally, that means reshaping our contribution to alternative media.

Making our project financially sustainable in the long run is a start. With an eye on models elsewhere, we see turning rabble into a worker cooperative that is self sustaining, rewards effort and punches well above our weight.

Rather than daydreaming about vast vats of funding falling into our lap from philanthropic millionaires or begging for dosh off the unions to up the alternative media ante - we are looking to you the reader, as we’ve always done.

We ran a successful Fundit campaign in the past, and since then we’ve only survived due to two long summers in the festival trenches slopping out pints with our comrades in the Workers Beer Company.

We need to cover our costs in a regular and structured fashion without having to resort to big fundraising drives or putting our existence in the hands of the funding application gods, which see us pissing against the wind and putting projects on hold for months on end.

Hence our Patreon page...

We're putting a plan together to make this whole thing sustainable in the long run, so it can do two things (1) survive financially and (2) reproduce itself with a new generation of rabble rousers, editors, contributors and graphics heads.

Through Patreon we can give you an insight into what we do, bring readers closer to the project and build a real radical media community around our work.

Once we've built a bit of steam on this thing, we can turn our attention to a proper rewards structure to thank you all.  Trust us, we've elaborated a pretty crazy scheme of gift giving rounds and involvement levels.

While the stocking fillers might be cute (think an Ugly Mugs series starting with [REDACTED]’s face on a coffee cup...) it is more important to ensure the continued existence of rabble for now...

If our Patreon succeeds we’ll be able to put our shoulder to the wheel to put out more regular bumper editions of rabble as well increased online content and sick videos.

Together we’ll turn rabble into a stable anti-regime Ireland’s Own for all you madbags and sinister fringers out there.

Covering basic costs and keeping a roof on our heads.

We're talking the very basics here.  Crowdfunding the boring necessities like rent and utilities out of the way is a good start and means we stop bleeding the cash injection raised by volunteering with the Workers Beer Company over the years.

Things like covering our office space which comes in at €300 per month - we share a space in Jigsaw with Dublin Digital Radio, it’s turning into an important hub that allows us to meet and discuss our projects - and with a shitty housing crisis, it provides a valuable workspace for people involved in rabble way from the kitchen table or overpriced cafes. It's also a resource that has been used by other local activist groups like the Irish Housing Network amongst others.

Our web-hosting is about €30 per month, when those big hits happen they do cost. We also pay for an Adobe Creative Cloud suite which comes in at €60 per month and is an essential tool for our work. Anything leftover will go into our petty cash to cover ongoing expenses that arise (eg bus fares for interviews, batteries, various website plugin subscriptions, maybe a pizza for the contributors…!) and be pooled for printing future issues of rabble.
