Ten years ago, I started a YouTube channel under the name "JesuOtaku" and accidentally launched myself into a life-changing career in anime criticism online. Five years later, I stepped away from video essays and entertainment to try and forge a healthier relationship with social media and commit to my new job as a writer and editor for Anime News Network. Five years on from that, I'm finally ready to bring these two worlds together.

So much has changed from those early days when I was talking about anime as a teenage amateur. To put it bluntly, my understanding of the industry has deepened, but my passion for the art form has never dimmed. With my new video series "Weebservations," I hope to bring my passion for Japanese animation back to YouTube in a more modern way, focusing on the aspects of otaku media that allow its stories to speak to audiences from all walks of life, through a balance of conversational delivery with an informed thesis.

Of course, YouTube's platform isn't the most supportive place for hosting media criticism, from its too-aggressive copyright policing to its insular fostering of toxic communities, and that's where you come in! My goal with this Patreon is not only to make enough coin to justify the time and energy needed to produce this content, but to foster a space on YouTube for weirdos and outcasts to have their voices and feelings about art heard in a more supportive environment. This is definitely a long-term goal that I won't be able to fulfill overnight, but since it's also the desire that got me into media criticism in the first place, there's no time like the present to start building the kind of future I want to see within the anime community.

Now, if more traditional video editorial is more your speed, my channel will also host Anime Season Scaledown (rating every new anime premiere at the top of each season), as well as occasional Top Ten lists for each season's best shows, opening/ending theme songs, and more! I look forward to hearing your feedback on what kind of new content you would like to see.

Plus as a Patreon-exclusive incentive, I'll also be offering live simulcast reaction videos to all patrons who pledge $5 or more per month. (You can watch two free samples of this format at these links here, and there are already more exclusive videos available for patrons now!) I know that reaction videos can be a punchline on YouTube, but to be honest, some of the most comforting content for me on the platform has been reaction videos—but the best stuff also tends to be edited, so my own reaction videos will likewise be edited to eliminate dead air and keep the focus on fun and thoughtful discussion instead.

Whether it's been five years, ten years, or you're hearing about my work for the first time, I hope you'll consider donating to my Patreon, so I can return to doing what I love and giving back to the community we all share as anime-loving weirdos. Thank you so much for your support.
