Hi, my name is Sophie Munro and I am the founder of Weird Wonderful Women!

It all started with the fascinating and tragic tale of Olive Oatman... Captured by Native Americans as a young girl, she was traded as a slave and adopted by the Mojave tribe. They embraced her as their own kin and gave her a distinctive chin tattoo to ensure her entry into the land of the death. After several happy years, Olive was discovered by local soldiers and wrenched back to "civilisation". Her reunion with her only surviving relative made headline news and a book detailing the experiences of the mysterious marked lady became a bestseller.

I found Olive's story remarkable and wondered why I'd never heard about her before. It occurred to me that there must be dozens, hundreds, thousands of women like Olive who I'd never had the privilege to learn about... Irena Sendler, who rescued around 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Violet Jessop, who survived three White Star Line cruise ship disasters, including the catastrophic sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, daughter of the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and Suffragette. She rebelliously refused to pay taxes and donated the proceeds from selling her possessions to the women's suffrage cause.

The more research I did, the more women I found whose amazing achievements had been all but omitted from history. I felt incredibly disappointed and let down by the historical education I'd received in school. Where were these women when I was a child and needed these strong, powerful female role models? Thus, Weird Wonderful Women was born.

Weird Wonderful Women now has over 700 YouTube subscribers and over 10,000 followers on Instagram. My most common comment is "how did I not know about this amazing woman before?" Which is why sharing these truly incredible stories and experiences of some of the world's strongest, most defiant and independent women is so important!

I have begun writing, with the view to publish, a Weird Wonderful Women book series. I also aim to be able to create higher quality YouTube videos and would eventually like to work towards affecting educational policy change to include more women in the historical curriculum. Weird Wonderful Women has so much potential for growth, with your help!

My heartfelt thanks,

Sophie Munro
