As a family with young children we were looking for an additional source of income to help us fund camping trips across the country with the intention of cultivating an even stronger family relationship, as well as to inspire our little ones’ curiosity and exploration through hands on learning. When we discovered we could work with our little ones at home running an eBay store, teaching them about business and customer service, all while encouraging their innate strengths, and bringing in extra income, it was a no brainer for us. We have always lived by the motto “reduce, reuse, recycle” but this business was a way to take it to the next level. We began researching and sourcing the best quality vintage and name brand items from thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales, rescuing interesting items from lonely shelves and helping connect them with people who appreciate them and can give them a new home. Each of our children also have a special role in helping us find treasures; they help us look for and repair minor flaws, steam wrinkled items, and pack sold items for shipping. Even our three year old takes great delight in running the shipping scraps to the trash can. It is truly a family effort from sourcing to shipping. We may not be the most efficient corporation, with all of our “employees” under the age of ten, but we certainly have a lot of heart and we truly do enjoy each step of the process as we serve our customers.

One of the greatest joys our eBay store has afforded us is the opportunity to give back to deserving families. One Mom contacted our store because her little boy with autism had a favorite Alphie robot toy and had worn out a specific alphabet song card that we happened to be selling. When she asked if we would separate the lot and sell her that one card, we knew we had the opportunity to bless this family. We happily sent it to them free of charge. We were delighted when his Mom sent us a picture of her son enjoying his familiar pastime: singing the alphabet with Alphie.

Another inspiring Mom contacted us about a vintage Disney Donald Duck sweater in our store. She wanted to give her son, who happened to have cerebral palsy and a love of all things Donald, the sweater for Christmas, but she couldn’t afford the our list price. We exchanged several messages back and forth trying to discern how we could best serve this family. So inspired by this Mom’s life mission to advocate for her son and others with disabilities, we were delighted to cut her a great deal to help make his Christmas more complete. We were so pleased when his Mom sent us a picture of her happy boy in his smart looking Donald sweater on Christmas morning.

Stories like these have helped us teach, reinforce, and practically apply several family mottoes in a way that our children will never forget: that We McLaughlins don’t go alone (we work as a team) We McLaughlins live generously, We McLaughlins speak with kindness (even when we encounter a rare customer who has had a bad day), and We McLaughlins walk in the light (doing the right thing, even when it costs you, will always serve you well). We love that we have the opportunity to live these out in front of our children as we live out our adventures together and hopefully our customers and those we encounter out and about benefit as a result.

We have had the opportunity of coaching several other couples on how to start a store of their own. One couple’s goal was to better financially prepare for starting a family. With four little blessings of our own, this cause was close to our hearts. We were ecstatic to help them discover a viable revenue stream to help make their dream a reality. We have also been able to contribute to another couple’s adoption fund and a young teenager’s kidney transplant fund because of the extra revenue from our eBay store.

The journey we have been on has been a dream come true. The goal was to bring our family closer together, teach our kids about business and stewardship, and ultimately launch a video channel that not only shared more of our story, but more importantly captured the stories of interesting people and places that we would travel to meet, all across our country. We have traveled over 12,000 miles in just the past year alone for this very purpose, exploring our own backyard in Florida, but criss-crossing our nation as far west as the Hoover Dam in Nevada and north to Sault Ste. Marie.   We can’t wait to share what we’re learning!
