About WHAT'S POPPIN' LADIEZ?!

WHAT’S POPPIN’ LADIEZ?! is a direct response to the objectification, harm, and erasure that womxn in Popping and Street Street Styles experience; it culminates as an ethnographic research project and event series that provides womxn a platform to share their own stories through teaching, judging, MCing, DJing battling, and showcasing. WPL?! is living blue print for other Street Styles organizers in how to organize in a way that celebrates womxn. It’s a step in reclaiming a Street Styles history that womxn are erased from and a demand for academia to be more accountable in their research practices.

While creating annual event spaces has been WPL?!'s  niche, we are looking to expand by creating year long programming for young womxn/girls* of color. WPL?! seeks to carve out a safe space by curating a roster with teaching artists of color (from the Street Styles dance community and beyond) to help mentor non-white girls to find their voice and  unapologetically take up space. Girls of color will gain choreographic and freestyling tools that will further engage their own fierce energy!

We are looking for support to make this programming low cost, if not free, to mitigate financial barriers for these brown girls. Street Styles dance forms are historically exploited from those of the African diaspora and it is important to make sure these dance forms are available to the communities that it's from. If you choose to be a patron for WHAT'S POPPIN' LADIEZ?! you will be supporting WPL?!'s mission to give brown girls the freedom to explore, and reclaim unapologetically, their voice, bodies, and movement.  You will be helping mitigate the financial barriers of finding space, student tuition, teaching artistry fees, travel fees (to other amazing womxn led events such as Ladies of Hip Hop) and more!
