About

Charles Woodruff Coates holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona School of Art in Printmaking, and a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Sequential Art from Savannah College of Art and Design. Coates draws from classical imagery such as greek sculptures and gothic cathedrals and relates them to contemporary notions of perfection. Sculptures and cathedrals act as metaphors for our own bodies and spiritual mindsets, and likewise are portrayed not as ideal, but with an emphasis on imperfection. Coates has exhibited artwork internationally in Bratislava, Slovakia, and Bangalore, India, as well as juried exhibitions in the United States including The North American Boston Print Biennial and the Atlanta Print Biennial. Coates currently lives in San Jose, California.

How your Patreon support helps:

Patreon is a contemporary platform that enables you to play one of the most important roles in my artistic career: that of the patron. Your monthly contributions will enable me to create higher quality urban sketches on a more frequent basis, and share them with you in a variety of ways. Specifically, your pledges help fund the studio space, materials, and time I need to create urban drawings and woodcut prints. As a patron, you'll gain exclusive insights into my artistic process and get to know my other patrons, all through the Patreon activity stream.

Below are suggested amounts you can contribute on a monthly basis, with accompanying rewards. There is a list of goals on the left side of the page, so you know exactly how your support is helping out.

Your name in vinyl lettering on my gallery wall $50 / Month
Your name becomes the starting point of the conversation anytime someone steps into my studio. I'll have the honor of telling them that your support is the reason I am able to create work and give community workshops in this professional studio. Most of all, your name is the first thing I see when I step into the studio to work.

If we have yet to meet in person, here's some additional info:

My professional life:

I hold a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from the University of Arizona. Since graduating, I have exhibited artwork internationally in Tokyo, Japan, and Bratislava, Slovakia, as well as juried exhibitions in the United States including The North American Boston Print Biennial. Additionally, I am the founder of the South Bay Urban Sketchers (SBUS) Meetup group, where I host gatherings to sketch on-site and share drawings across the bay-area.

My personal life:

I spend my free time watching movies, reading books, and frequenting galleries. Most of the media I explore is related to themes I communicate in my artwork.  I'm looking forward to writing reviews of books, movies, and how they relate to the artistic process in the future. Of course, you'll read them first on Patreon. On the weekends I volunteer at The Legion of Honor, in San Francisco, educating museum visitors about the printmaking process.
