"The Daylight Here" (Alternate Version)

Heyo, I just recorded this song as my entry to NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. If you know what's good for you, you're already familiar with the version I recorded with Nataly Dawn for our band My Terrible Friend. It's one of my favorites that I've written, so I decided to roll with it for my Tiny Desk submission. If you don't know what a Tiny Desk Concert is, look it up on YouTube. You will see a bunch of performances by every band I like. The winner of this contest gets to do one of those, so I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring. Actually, that sounds too casual. Entering an NPR contest as an independent musician is more like trying to stuff a sombrero into a subway car that's already totally full of hats. So, you know. I thought I'd do that. Big Star Cover- "Thirteen"

I've loved this song since hearing Elliott Smith's version of it, which was prominently featured on a mix CD I got from a friend in 2007. (It was also on Elliott's album "New Moon," but I'd argue the mix CD was more significant.) I used to play it from time to time in my open mic days and it's never really gotten old, so I decided to lay it down over the weekend with some added guitar bits. Hope you like it, and thanks for yours ears, eyes, and interest as always. -Lauren

Stephen Mesa Wow, this is incredibly done! I have listened to it many many times now. You've totally done it justice. Side note: this may sound absurd, but my brand new son was super fussy and crying when I turned this on and it mesmerized him! Your music is so magical it soothes crying babies!

Hello loyal patrons! I have another Outer States character design for you all, and I'm busy working on a couple other things to show you in the near future as well. So, without further ado, meet Bravo Carradine, a character who— Well, actually, Jacob (reminder: he is the person writing Outer States with me) has a much better description of Bravo than I could put together, so I'll let him take over from here: "Major Bravo Carradine is not the greatest dude. He's done some really shitty stuff and he deserves your scorn. Still, he's pretty good at his job (spy/super soldier of the decidedly evil category) so maybe that's a redeeming quality (it isn't). You wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley, or a light alley, or even a highly populated department store. He's a nasty, brutish fighter and he's stolen a bunch of the West Village's most secret and powerful thief techniques. Follow his wacky story and hope to god he gets what's coming to him. Hello again!! Okay so today I have another Outer States character design for you, and this is one I'm REALLY EXCITED ABOUT! Sonja is one of the secondary characters we've known about for longest (so she's existed in our heads for well over two years), and this is her first Official Art. Please enjoy! Oh and here are Jacob's character notes because, again, he's way better at doing that than I am: "Sonja is the strongest ever and everyone looks up to her and you should too. She boldly sacrifices her natural invulnerability for outrageous strength and, we might add, command of the forces of darkness. She and her mighty blade, the Coral Fang, will smash you into atoms using the unstoppable power of raw chaos. Just playin' though, cause she's honestly super cool and great to hang with. She was a hero in the war with the mainland and these days she's a top cop. She went through a rough breakup and some problems with booze on the way but hey, we all have a few hiccups in our 20s, amirite? Guess which other character we've illustrated is her ex-girlfriend! Hello all!!

First of all, welcome new patrons~~ There are a bunch of you this month and I'm super super happy you're here, especially because there's going to be some Patreon-exclusive content in the next few days and I want as many people as possible to see it.

SECOND OF ALL: Here is the second installment in my Anime Fashion Look Book project! Last month I illustrated some of Nanami's outfits from Kamisama Kiss, and this month I've got some of Kurako's best looks, from Princess Jellyfish. I had a really hard time choosing which ones to draw because they were all so excellent—maybe I'll do another round in the future? :3
