Hi, I'm Zack! I made this Patreon to share my creative journey and playful path with you!

---ABOUT ME ---
------------------------
Born: 1985, Athens, Georgia, USA
Likes: Drawing, games, food, fun
Current status: Studying manga/comics in Japan

I have a lot of creative interests from video games to physical games to comics/manga to writing. But the unifying theme is loving monsters, which to me represent unknown & mysterious things. (I wrote about my idea of "monster lovehere.)

Everyone who supports this Patreon can:
・see behind-the-scenes thoughts & sketches
・join the discussion about what to make and how to make it
・be part of a cool & fun community! I'm hoping to build a community of monster lovers here, on Discord (see the goals), and beyond! Active participation and feedback is welcome!

I'll share some Patreon content outside of Patreon because I like spreading the monster love, but the Patreon squad will always get the first look at everything from first glimpses to the final version (plus some secret things along the way that no one else shall ever see, gyahaha!).

Here's what I've made so far and what I want to make in the future:

---VIDEO GAMES---
-------------------------
I like playing & making video games, especially the monster design part.
DONE: Monster Garden! See on Steamitch.io, read more on DestructoidPC Gamer
・Monster Match, a monster personality quiz you can play free in your browser!
NEXT: Translate Monster Garden into Japanese (using my broken Japanese to simulate the mysterious vibe of oddly translated JRPGs that inspired Monster Garden).
A monster dating sim/visual novel!

---PHYSICAL GAMES / IMPROV GAMES / BODY GAMES ---
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Call 'em whatever sounds the least freaky to you (or the MOST freaky!), but I love playing games in the non-digital real world, too!
DONE: Physical game sessions at festivals like Indiecade, workshops with college and high school students, and monthly physical game meetups. Pics below.
NEXT: An "Illustrated Cookbook of Play" of my favorite games! See mock-up below.
・Find venues/events to hold physical game sessions in Japan.

---WRITING---
-----------------
I also love to write, whether it's silly monster dialogue or TOTALLY serious blog posts.

DONE: Blog posts about video games & some features on Gamasutra.
・ Book chapter about indie game festivals.
・Sidebar for a book that was a major honor to be a part of. (More details soon.)
NEXT: Complete a series of blog posts about the games that inspired Monster Garden.

---MANGA/COMICS---
----------------------
Right now I'm honing my monster drawing & storytelling skills at Kyoto Seika University, the first school in Japan to have a manga department! I'm in a two-year program until 2021.

DONE: Cthulhu-themed manga (but from the monsters' perspective) for a digital manga anthology. It's only available in Japanese, so I mocked up the English page above just for you (read from right to left).

NEXT:
I've been working on a 32-page manga, seen above (read right to left). (You can download the full sketch here. It appeared briefly on Japanese TV with me!) Next I'll make the final, inked version. This is my main focus right now.
・I have a few other projects like Lord Lactose (food science educational comic), too.

---OTHER STUFF---
-----------------------------
・I made a  spreadsheet of indie game festivals that welcome physical games, and it transformed into a catalogue of global game events. I wanna update it for this year!
・I wrote a tweet about healing games that went viral & turned into a thread of healing game recommendations. I wanna write about & make more healing games! (I like to think of Monster Garden as a healing game.)

---HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN---
--------------------------------------------------
I spend a good chunk of time paying the bills with Japanese-English translation--which I'm actually pleased as punch to be able to do! I just think I could have more of a positive impact (and more fun!) if I put more time into everything you see here.

Thank you for reading this, and thanks for any and all support--just one dollar means a lot, and I'd love to have you with me on my playful path!**

**That's a reference to Bernie de Koven's book “A Playful Path”! Besides making & documenting a bunch of physical games, he also wrote a lot about fun and how important it is. (Check out his site Deep Fun!)

Bernie's a huge inspiration because at the end of the day, I just like fun. And I want other people to have fun, too. I think that’s why I like simple physical games so much. And why I made Monster Garden. And love monsters.

Fun, play, imagination, monstersーthese are the keywords for me. And they all come together in the form of monster love. Here's wishing you lots of it! 👹👹👹

So, care to join me on my fun-filled journey to monster land and beyond...?
