And no, I am not trying to con you into paying me to do work I should be paying you for, that is clearly ludicrous ;)

About Xauri'EL Zwaan

I am Xauri'EL Zwaan, a mendicant artist in search of meaning, fame and fortune, and pie (where available).  I am a socialist greenpunk transhumanist, a genderfluid bisexual, a Canadian, a Satanist, and a goth living with Major Depressive Disorder.  For over two decades now I have been writing science fiction and fantasy, with some small amount of publication success.  If you would like to see samples of my previous work to whet your appetite, you may access a (now sadly defunct) blog-based experimental sci-fi project at Futuristical or read some more traditional short fiction at Garbled Transmissions,  365Tomorrows, Polar Borealis (Issue #9), and The Drabble.  My current public-facing projects are an ongoing serial novel entitled Shadowland, available on WattPad, and A Winner Is You, a blog exploring the philosophical and sociological elements of video games. I am also continually writing fiction intended for traditional publishing and have independently re-released  some stories that have previously been traditionally published on SmashWords.

Some of the major themes of my work include the performance of gender and its unstable meaning, particularly in relation to developing technologies of human enhancement and the changing relationship of technology to the body; the intersection of disability, aging, and technology; and the impact of technology on capitalist power structures and methods of social control such as corporate culture, market economics, policing, and bureaucracy. My influences for this work come from many sources, including the classic ‘golden age’ science fiction of Asimov and Heinlein et al, the work of explicitly social activist authors such as Octavia Butler, Ursula Leguin, Ann Leckie, and N. K. Jemisin, all of the Punk genres, and the innovative subgenres of Transhumanist fiction, GameLit, and the New Weird. My major goal as a writer is to use my explorations of possible future technological societies and metaphorical alternate realities to speak truth to the power structures of our world and explore the ways in which they could be reinforced, undermined, remixed, and transformed.

I'm a weird in-between kind of person, and it's a weird in-between kind of world we live in. I'm an experimentalist, and my writing career has been a strange blend of traditional publishing, independent publishing, and free-access or Creative Commons content supported by ads (and now by Patreon and other crowdfunding platforms). I was part of one of the earliest experimental online-only fiction journals, Spectra Magazine, and I was fiction-blogging before it was cool. I've made money just about every way a fiction writer can, though never very much. And I would love to devote myself full-time to writing, but my financial situation isn't in a position right now to allow that. And this is where you come in, gentle reader! Your support would make a world of difference to me, and in return, I'm going to provide both ongoing updates to public-facing content, and stories offered for sale in other venues as rewards to my loyal Patrons. I am also looking forward to building a community here, stretching myself a bit on social media, and building my skills as a writer.  Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to getting to know you better!
