Hey Guys, my name is Yan.
I am a photographer and 3D lighting technical director.
I have been studying lighting for over 10 years starting with concept and advertising photography and moving towards 3D/CGI lately.
I also have a passion for teaching which I want to develop here on Patreon with your help.

If you want to know more about my work, please visit my website: www.yan.ro

Using proper lighting design to tell a story with your work is essential in VFX, animation, photography, and design. For many projects, lighting is everything.

While working on commercial projects I often face unusual lighting tasks that require unconventional setups to emphasise the look and feel needed.
Because of the lack of information on this topic online especially for 3D artists, I decided to share my lighting techniques with you and create comprehensive long therm tutorials and case studies for lighting different scenarios such as studio and outdoor portraits, product and concept art using Cinema 4D, Houdini and Redshift.
Although I will be using a 3D software for these lessons, the same principles can be applied in photography and videography.

If you like my portfolio feel free to become my patron.
With your help I will be able to start creating this tutorials.

What's in for you?

For becoming a patron, I am going to share the upcoming content exclusively available here with you.
My plan is to start with the principles of lighting and then dive intro studio lighting for portraits and product, on location lighting, light matching, and a lot of case studies from my current work and upcoming projects.
Below you can find a sneak peak of the course overview. Further lessons will be added each month.
Chapter 1 - Fundamentals
  1. Physics of light;
  2. Types of lights in 3D and in real life: (Area, Spot, Sun/Infinite, IES, HDRI, Mesh);
  3. Light falloff/inverse square law;
  4. Custom Light textures + Light temperatures;
Chapter 2 - Studio Lighting
  1. Overview of studio lights and tools (soft-box, umbrellas, led panels, strobe, flags, reflectors, backplate);
  2. High key and low key;
  3. Illuminating the face - butterfly, rembrant, badger lighting;
  4. Illuminating the face - 4 custom light setups for portraits.
  5. Illuminating products - 2 custom light setups for products;
Chapter 3 - Outdoor/ Indoor Lighting
  1. Combining Natural Light/HDRI with artificial light;
  2. High key and low key for outdoors;
  3. Matching product light with environment light.
  4. Creating your own HDRI
Chapter 4 - Various Case Studies

How does it work?
When you sign up as my patron, you’ll select how much you'd like to pledge per month.
This money goes directly (well - minus Patreon's & PayPal's share) into funding the Vimeo channel, webspace, hardware and infrastructure and enables me to invest time to create educational content for you.

And do not worry, you are always in complete control: you can cancel your support at any time.

Thank you!
