Hi! I'm Kate Mothes, and I'm the creator of Young Space, a contemporary art platform that utilizes the internet to share work by early-career and emerging artists (as well as provide some occasional inspiration from the greats!). Essentially, I share and curate work that is worth checking out. Some artists are just getting started (and that goes for all age ranges and walks of life), and some have been working for a while, but I believe there's real value in seeing what's around us, keeping our fingers on the pulse, and most importantly connecting with one another. I adore hearing from artists who were approached by collectors or galleries after their work was shared on @yngspc.

Young Space is also a direct conduit to an increasing number of exhibitions that I curate in galleries, museums, artist-run spaces and other project spaces around the world. Since I really gave Young Space its first push on Instagram back in 2015, it's amassed an international following and readership of the regular artist interviews that appear on yngspc.com.

Young Space (or yngspc) is fueled by L-O-V-E. I just love it, and all of the marvelous people that not only I get to meet, but how it has become a platform where artists meet artists, gallerists meet artists, artists meet collectors, curators meet gallerists -- it's crazy cool. And, basically, it's my babe.

Until this year, I was working full time at another job in order to fund most of the web costs, advertising, materials, postage, travel--you name it, not to mention time! More than anything, I want to continue it AND to see it grow. I know it can become even more useful, meaningful, and beneficial to the artists, collectors, gallerists, curators, and art lovers who follow along, and who use it as a tool for finding out about artists and their work.

Features on the website and Instagram are always free for artists; I never charge anyone to share their work online unless it's for a curated, application-based project that involves a lot of curatorial and admin effort, and additional promotion. Historically, yngspc projects have been generously funded by nominal fees paid by the artists who apply to international open calls for art, which are curated into group exhibitions in various locations. They're popular opportunities, and I'd love these to continue, but I'd also love to be able to lower that cost or get rid of fees altogether someday. Otherwise, I subsist on the occasional honorariums or stipends (as they are available) from the organizations I collaborate with.

This year, I started working the other job less, and began focusing more on Young Space. That meant moving back home to save money (YES, I am over 30 and I did this. I'm talking to you, every creative person ever -- you do what ya gotta. Also, hugs to all parents who support their kiddos and their weird arty ideas, I see you). I'm starting this new Patreon as at least one way to hopefully sustain Young Space--and maybe even, down the line, providing a little bit of a wage for myself so I'm not scraping the bottom of the barrel ALL the time... ;)

I want to dedicate more time to curating shows, researching and applying for grants, meeting artists, traveling to visit studios and exhibitions and sharing those experiences, creating more content for more to see, visiting students, generating resources for artists, supporting guest-curated projects and initiatives, and always learning more -- so that I can share more!

I love love love you for checking this out, and for your support of yngspc as it continues to roil and shake and grow into whatever it's going to be.

xxxx Kate
