Kola Tubosun is creating Yorùbá Names Project

For the last ten years, I have led teams, and worked collaboratively, to help create solutions to help African languages survive. Some of these projects include a multimedia dictionary of names at YorubaName.com, a Rotation Curation twitter account at  @NaijaTwitafree tonemarking software for Igbo and Yorùbá, #TweetYoruba advocacy, and upcoming online Yoruba and Igbo lexical dictionaries, among others. (More about my work here and here).

The funding for these projects have come from donors, volunteers, friends, family, and personal funds, and the work has been  open source and collaborative in nature, so they can be replicated across the continent. Yet, because we are always in need of funds to support the project, paying for servers and other small and large expenses, we've always had to keep fundraising, which can be distracting and time-consuming.

The overall purpose of these projects is to help support and sustain African language capabilities in a technological age, especially on the internet. I've written a lot about this problem which has made life difficult for people whose only competent medium of expression is their first language to cope with the changing times (see  herehere, and here). We want to help remove these obstacles and help facilitate inclusion of these millions of people into the technological age through the creation of language technology solutions that are free and accessible to all.

This is why we need your support. If you promise to give us any amount from $2 every month (or whatever else above that you can afford), we will be able to do even more.
