About YourShelf

-YourShelf-
Everyone's favourite book subscription service is shooting for the stars, and we want you to come stargazing with us.

About YourShelf
We began as a boutique personalised book subscription, sending beautifully presented and ribbon-wrapped bundles of books to subscribers, each book personally selected based on the subscriber's tastes. We are UK-based but have subscribers all over the world.

YourShelf is run pretty much entirely by one individual in his spare time; founder, director and chief curator Juliano Zaffino writes every social media post, sends every email, and curates, orders, packs and ships every single bundle himself, by hand. Jay has not taken a profit from the business, but has applied any surplus funds (which there is not often much of!) towards the Small Kindness programme, sending out free bundles of books to followers and subscribers who could do with a little extra brightness in their lives.

Where We're Going
We have some pretty big plans for the next few years. We want to grow, we want to have fun and bring that fun to our followers, and we want to spread our mission: to share a love for quality literature, especially from underrepresented writers, far and wide across the world, while encouraging and fostering a culture of kindness online and in-person amongst the literary community.

How are we going to do that? It's a good question, and we have a few ideas. Firstly, we are starting up The YourShelf Podcast, inviting our favourite bookish personalities to chat with Jay and others every month, discussing book recommendations, their own work and writing, and the world at large. Secondly, we're setting up The YourShelf Press, a boutique publishing house commissioning new and exciting books of poetry, essays, short stories and more from new and established voices. We intend to spend the first couple of years investing in the Press, so that going forward we can look at publishing books that are ethically produced, and using a portion of our profits to support charitable causes (as agreed between YourShelf and our authors).

There's more. We're moving away from our current business model; while we're known for our signature bundle, the logistics of curating these bundles, sourcing and packaging and sending physical books, is becoming not only increasingly difficult, but also a practice that is neither financially nor environmentally sustainable. By the time bundles are received, we have moved on to new Guest Curated books, and so our subscribers are faced with the choice: order a bundle to support our community, or read along with our monthly recommendations on time! While we would still keep sending out the occasional physical bundles for our Small Kindness programme and as gifts, prizes and so on, our curating process would take on the form of consultation - for a minimal fee, you will be provided with a short list of recommended books each month, along with links to affordable places to buy these books. (We'd like to offer discounts on curation for those who buy their books at their local bookstores, too.)

We'd like to set up a monthly, in-person book-club too, most likely in London but perhaps with some regional or even international events from time-to-time, bringing together readers, writers, Guest Curators, podcast guests and more for an evening of big book loving. Then there's competitions, for special books and signed books; a variety of monthly Guest Curators each month, to increase the options for our readers; digital as well as in-person discussion spaces. Videos, articles and reviews, written by us, and/or commissioned by us. We want to partner with charitable causes and organisations to raise money and awareness for the issues that matter.

Where We've Been
Since its inception in 2016, -YourShelf- has grown and adapted with the times; 2019 saw the start of the monthly Guest Curator programme, where distinguished authors, artists, and other book-inclined personalities are invited to recommend one book for inclusion in every bundle. So far we have had some of our favourite authors, like British poet Hannah Sullivan and American novelist Lauren Groff, as well as one of our favourite musicians, poets, and thinkers: Florence Welch, of Florence + The Machine. We have many more exciting Guest Curators lined up for the coming months.

Throughout 2019, YourShelf only included books written by women in bundles, an action to protest the pandemic of misogynistic ignorance not only within the literary industry but amongst its clientele. We were particularly inspired to undertake this endeavour in the wake of Lauren Groff's phenomenal By The Book feature for the New York Times.

In May 2019 we participated in our first public event, where Jay joined Between Two Books to interview Pussy Riot's Nadya Tolokonnikova live, on-stage at FORM in Arcosanti, Arizona, as part of an event also featuring Florence Welch and Yrsa Daley-Ward. We also ran a Book Curation Table at the Between Two Books tent at British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park, London, in July 2019.

Why We Need You
These things take time, and these things take money. We have been blown away constantly over the past few years by the love and support in our little bookish community. We want to make the most of your love and support, and return it back to you tenfold. Your patronage would help us with so many practical elements, for instance paying for equipment, hiring venues, fronting some of the costs involved with publishing new books, and a variety of other things that will take a long time to achieve without some upfront investment. Take a look at our various patron tiers to see all the rewards on offer for supporting YourShelf: from free recommendations and access to exclusive content to free books from The YourShelf Press.
