About Zachary Reinstatler

In the fall of 2018, I began raising money to help me reach my ultimate goal of completing my education to become a clinical or counseling psychologist, provide clinical services to underserved populations, and conduct research on and for the benefit of the trans community. As someone living at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities (queer, trans, disabled, & low income), who has personally had to navigate the mental health care system, I saw a need for providers who could understand and provide culturally competent care. In particular, I saw the need for trans healthcare providers in a system which routinely harms and discriminates against trans people. I went back to school for psychology and substance abuse counseling with the long term goal of completing my PhD, after many years of my own personal struggle with my health and finally receiving the treatment I needed to get better, motivated by the desire to help others and fill in part of the gap of culturally competent care currently left in our healthcare system. Later, I also saw the need for trans researchers as trans people continue to be understudied in the field, and as a result, face discrepancies in the quality of care provided to them. After hearing from multiple professors that I would be well suited to research, I set my sights on serving my community in this way alongside clinical work. It is now my life mission to serve those who have historically been harmed or ignored and underserved by the healthcare system, both in clinical work and in research. Everything I do in my studies and training is with the goal of creating a more equitable and compassionate healthcare system for all.

With the support of my community, I have made great strides towards these long term goals. Every semester since I returned to school, I have been on the Dean's List. In the fall of 2019, I earned a 4.0 while balancing 15 credit hours for the first time. I have also become an undergraduate student affiliate member of the American Psychological Association, earned my licensure as a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant, become a McNair scholar and participated as a research assistant under the direction of Dr. Anjali Dutt in the Human Rights and Social Context Lab here at the University of Cincinnati where I participated in participatory research with refugee expectant mothers in the United States, and become a recipient of the Carolyn Kelly Memorial Education Fund Scholarship, a scholarship granted to those who are likely to make a profound difference in their respective communities, and designated for those from marginalized backgrounds, including transgender individuals.

None of this would have been possible without the support of my community, who has helped me financially during this time as I pursue my goals. I have made great strides in the last year and a half because of everyone's support. Now, I am asking for your help to continue these efforts.

If you are able, your monthly sponsorship through this Patreon is greatly appreciated. All funds will go towards meeting living, academic, and professional expenses, while I work on my degrees in psychology and substance abuse counseling. Examples of where these funds will go include the following. These are not listed in any particular order.

1. Medical expenses not covered by insurance. For example, co-pays for prescription medication and any fees for out of network specialists.
2. Groceries and household supplies. For example, cleaning products and personal hygiene items.
3. Costs associated with caring for my registered emotional support animal, including litter, food, any needed medications, and veterinary fees.
4. Transportation costs, including bus fare and ride sharing.
5. Clothing, including professional clothing needed for academic, clinical, and research settings.
6. Professional expenses such as liability insurance for when I begin seeing clients and American Psychological Association membership fees.
7. Any academic costs not covered by financial aid, including summer tuition and office supplies.
8. Other miscellaneous expenses including laundry fees and my monthly phone bill.

I am also in the process of working on a project called "The Brunch Club" which will be associated with this Patreon. It will be a podcast where I talk about issues related to mental health, substance use, social justice, equity in healthcare, and the like. The first episode has been recorded but not released to the public yet. It is available to sponsors here on my Patreon. All sponsors will gain early access and sneak peeks to this project as well as regular updates on the work I am doing in my studies.

If you would like to learn more about me, my background, and my credentials, you can read more at my website.

Thank you so much for your support. And may you and your loved ones remain safe and healthy.

Best,

Zach Reinstatler
