About Zuzana Límová

Hi lovely patron,

Thank you so much for visiting my Patreon site and thus considering supporting my work. I want you to know that I really appreciate it.

Working on my movie 'Before I Met You' has truly changed my life. I didn't realise that my graduation film covering the daily routine in Slovak maternity wards would stir so much emotion and controversy. Shortly after its release, the film caused a national scandal. We had to face a daily onslaught of critical media coverage, censorship and even threatening messages, trying to silence us and the films screenings. As a result, the Slovak premiere of Before I Met You was sold out within a few short hours. It was and still is a whirlwind.

Today we are proud to say that our film has given voice to hundreds if not thousands of women and men with similar traumatic experiences from Slovak maternity wards. But thanks to social upheaval and subsequent public pressure, the Ministry of Healthcare announced a new policy of positive changes that will be implemented in Slovak hospitals. These will lead to more dignified and respectful care for mothers and their children in Slovakia.

I am proud to say, that my film has been screened in many other countries as well, including Romania, Czech republic, Italy and Croatia. We continue to receive invitations from all over the world to screen the documentary further, as well as host discussions about the many very important issues addressed in the film.

However, considering that 'Before I Met You' was a diploma film, it also left me without any budget to travel to the screenings and speaking engagements. Many of the events I get invited to aren't able to cover any of my expenses, as they are organised by local festivals, educational institutions and mothers' centres.

It simply is not doable for me, especially with having no regular income and raising a small child.

Should you feel inspired to donate to my cause, your money will help me to cover my expenses and travel to the various screening and discussions of my 'Before I Met You' film.

Thank you so much for stopping by and considering to support me. It means the world to me.

Before I Met You
It is supposed to be the happiest day of a woman’s life. In Slovakian maternity wards, however, the joy of motherhood can quickly turn into a nightmare. In their isolation, women face strict routines, loneliness and different forms of violence.

The documentary 'Before I Met You' provides an intimate look at what goes on behind the closed doors of delivery rooms, where nobody but mothers-to-be are allowed to enter.

Here the miracle of birth is nothing more than a routine chore and everyone, including midwives and doctors, must submit to absurd rules made decades ago. Instead of trusting their intuition during the most natural process of human life, mothers must obey the medical staff and follow the out-of-date procedures with no regard to their own feelings.

The voices of women who dare to speak up complement the film’s images captured during delivery in a public hospital. Situational interviews with staff members uncover the dark side of the healthcare system that prefers routine and medication to humanity.

What does it feel like to bring a new life into the world under these conditions? Before I Met You will answer this question.

$23.30 of $500 per month
Reaching this goal will allow me to cover the travel expenses to festivals and screening of my film 'Before I Met You', as well as to speaking engagements on human rights in childbirth. I get many invitations to speak at different events in Slovakia and abroad, but these are usually severely under-financed and unable to cover my expenses (travels, accommodation, etc.).
