About Nicholas Edward Williams: American Songcatcher

Welcome!
I'm so glad you've decided to stop by this community's Patreon page. This is the place for music lovers and free thinkers to directly support the podcast American Songcatcher, as an independent entity uncovering the history of American Roots music. Thank you for valuing this endeavor enough to stop by!

What is American Songcatcher
Do you love American music? I mean, do you REALLY love the music enough to know how it exists, how it came to be? If so, I have a brand new podcast that, if I do say so myself, you'll quite like. However, it's not your typical music podcast...

Each episode, we'll uncover unique stories and lesser-known facts behind five songs, spanning from those created centuries ago to those experimenting with tradition today. We'll trace the roots of American music from its emigrated past, to current artists playing the songs forward. Then, as folk artists have always done, I'll re-create my version of them. From European immigrants who carried their tunes into the Appalachian mountains, to songs of the South: Gospel, Ragtime, Blues, Country, and the Folk music derived from it all. We'll go behind the curtain of legends, and shine the limelight on many integral lesser-known artists who have influenced generations, such as Bessie Smith, Ola Belle Reed, Blind Blake, Odetta and Dave Van Ronk. You'll hear interviews with the musicians, filmmakers, independent media companies and venue owners holding the torch for the foundation of American music today. "Here’s to the songs of old, may they live on forever."

I’ve often wondered, do people really care about where the songs they love today come from? Are they willing to listen to the stories of the artists and songs that connect the dots from where we are now to the past?
Do people want to hear new versions of these songs?
I believe you do, and I’m so grateful to you for being here.

Am I Qualified to be a Musical Podcast Host?
Well, I'd like to think so! I've been a professional musician for the last 13 years. I’ve toured all over the US, Western Europe, the UK and Southern Australia, and played over 1000 gigs. I've put out nine full-length records, opened for some of the greats (Taj Mahal, The Wood Brothers) booked for other bands, and taught lessons. I've been an amateur musicologist for the last three years, thanks to my late mentor, Joan Crane, who studied under Andy Cohen, who studied under Reverend Gary Davis. The biggest lesson she taught me was to "play these songs forward", meaning to do my part do keep where American Roots music comes from alive.

Why Do I Need Your Help?
I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, but I’ve learned the hard way that without support of a community, taking on any endeavor in the music business can be a long and arduous road to walk down. It's not easy stuff, and it requires a whopping amount of time and dedication. Each episode takes around 20 hours to plan, research, prepare the story, harvest old soundbites, record and then promote. I'm hoping to put out 2 episodes a month, and since I haven't been touring after COVID (thus, not much in the way of financial means through shows) and we have a baby on the way in August of 2020, there's a lot of reason for me to be here asking for your support. This grants me the ability to stay sustained in music, and allows me to further my musicologist education.

I want my artistic process to be part of a community, a community of people who are willing to listen deeply, think critically, be creative, challenge assumptions, and challenge me. I want you to be part of that community.

What is Patreon All About?
Patreon offers a future of sustainable creativity. It’s a way to support original, independent music while having an engaging and personal relationship with the artist. When you become a patron, you are joining my community. You become part of making this podcast, and all of the creative content that I'll be putting out monthly.

There are different levels of support, but you can join this Patreon community for as little as $10 a month. I’ll be offering early and exclusive access to the podcast episodes (plus additional bonus content) music videos, merchandise, patreon-only polls, live video concerts, downloads, unreleased material, collaboration opportunities, and a personal relationship with my artistic process, all within a safe community of free thinking people.

Why Am I Doing This?
My mission is to continue exposing all generations to the importance and cultural relevance of American Roots Music, to keep these old songs alive. This is bigger than me, and is so worth doing! I’d be honored for you to join me on this journey. Thank you for you time and consideration!

Sincerely,
Nicholas Edward Williams
