Hot Drinks, First Aid

$3
per month
Thank you for funding my hot drinks and stocking my first aid kit!!! I drink lots of hot drinks in the winter when I'm Making All The Things in my underheated studio space. And you're pitching in too on days when I am singlehandedly helping bandage stocks to go up 'cause I work with glass, ya?

At this level of patronage, not only do you get my weekly post, but I'll also give you first crack (painful pun intended) at new stained glass panels (along with other crazy weird stuff I make) at this level, meaning I'll put them for sale here for 72 hours before launching them on "open-to-the-public" platforms.

First and foremost, thank you for being here!

At this level of patronage, you receive more than my words in your inbox - you get words in your mailbox TOO! After you've been a patron at this level for six months, you’ll receive one of my famous word magnets made in dichroic glass and sent to your mailing address. If applicable, it will be one of my new phrases for the year, meaning that while most years I turn out some new phrase, that's not always the case. (I'll keep track though, and I promise that you won't get repeats from year to year.)

I'll send a new phrase to you 12 months after the first, and 12 months after that, and so on.  These dichroic magnets are an exclusive thing that you can't buy in my shop.  It will be just for my patrons at this level and tiers above.

You also get the benefits of the $3/month tier, which is to say that in addition to the weekly post, you'll have 72 hours in which to view every new stained glass panel (or any other weird thing I decide to list here) before it becomes publicly available.

Thank you for signing up!

This tier is radically different from my "stuff oriented" tiers, so please read it carefully, because it's not about my "glass art". Instead, the focus here is connection and altruism. It's about my tribe, my Ren folk, my self employed friends, and to sum it up, any person whose path I cross that could use a few meals tucked into their pocket without judgment.

Your membership includes the weekly posts, the 72 hour preview window in which new stained glass pieces (as well as occasional other weird things) are launched for patrons only, and a blanket 10% off anything you wish to buy that I show off here on Patreon. The highlight of this level though is that your first $10 payment that's processed through Patreon, is forwarded to an artist or struggling service provider that needs it right now. You'll get a postcard shortly after that tells you a little bit about the amazing person to whom your money was gifted, without disclosing anything vital that would out the recipient in any fashion (unless they have publicly asked for help). For every six months that you remain a Patron in this tier, you will receive one postcard, and one payment will be forwarded.

When I started my Patreon channel, one of my goals was altruism, and since artists know everybody, I feel like I am in a particularly good position to meld the two goals... because #TeamHuman means all of us.

About M. Sotherden

If you made it this far, I would like to say thank you. This is - by far - the coolest place to find me on the internet, and here's why: Not only do you get to travel vicariously with me weekly, but you also get first dibs on the weirdest and rarest of the crazy glass etc. art that my brain dreams up. You'll see things here that haven't made it to a Renaissance Faire near you, and, depending on where my rabbit holes take me, those things may or may not ever show up at a festival.

Here's what I get out of it: one of the biggest things lacking in any full time creative person's life is dependable income, and, when the pandemic came a-knockin', my patr(e)ons saved my financial butt, as I watched Ren Faire after Ren Faire get shut down for 2020's season. I'm not going to lie, it was terrifying and I (along with most of the world I suspect) hope to never have to go through something like that again, However, I knew that I could eke it out and not lose my house, or car, or other vital things because of the support I had here. The other thing I get out of it is this: I have responsibilities at present (which you can read about if you sign up!) that mean I can't always get in a full week of work, and therefore the money that my patr(e)ons provide here offsets the burden of being a worked-to-death glass-producing-machine.

And if you stumbled across this page randomly, (wow, how cool would that be!?!) and we haven't met in real life, here's the obligatory bio paragraph! I've been a full time glass artist for over 15 years. At 3-4 shows a year, I get to meet my fans face to face, by selling my work at Renaissance Festivals in a 3 state area. The other half of the year I get to hang out with my amazing dogs and make All The Glass And Mixed Media Things. I love my job, and I especially love when I have some hare-brained idea that involves glass, kilns, torches, metal, polymer clay, epoxy, or all of the above. To come with me on my glass art journey, (I promise you cannot catch fire through a computer screen!), sign up to become one of my patrons, and walk through the "looking glass" with me as I make magic happen in glass. (And hey, thank you. I wouldn't be making cool things if it weren't for my amazing patrons, customers, and support network.)

When one sells at a Renaissance Festival, it's costly... one pays both a "vendor fee" and then is often expected to additionally buy or build a building, yet I know of no better way to get my slightly offbeat style of art in the hands of a buying public.  And booth buying real estate at a Ren Faire is expensive... often requiring loans involving a comma from multiple parties (cause, hey, banks don't really like people whose income is cash-based. They want a paper trail.) I would love to be able to buy my next booth with cash in hand and avoid the loan process altogether.
