About New York Budo Association

The New York Budo Association is a nonprofit organization (501(c) 3, whose mission is to practice and sustain the techniques, philosophies, and benefits of the Japanese martial arts. We are also promoting culture, physical and mental growth, health and well-being as well as non-denominational spirituality. These traditional Japanese arts are a “Do” (道) (or “Tao” in Chinese), a Way, through which one strives to reveal the true self. By bringing this true self forward, one is transformed, and so also is the world.

Our focus is the study of Iaido (居合道) the drawing of the Japanese sword, specifically Ryushin Shouchi Ryu (柳心照智流) under the guidance of Kunikazu Yahagi Sensei, the second soke (headmaster) of RSR. We also offer Kyudo (弓道) Japanese archery, specifically Heki-ryū Chikurin-ha (竹林派).

This is an interview we did with Yahagi Sensei in 2017

During the COVID-19 global pandemic we were forced to find alternative ways to continue our training. We eventually migrated online and found that a combination of online classes, combined with instructor feedback, as well as 1-on-1 classes were extremely successful for new students. So we began to offer "Remote Memberships" to anyone who wished to learn and practice in Ryushin Shouchi Ryu (RSR) with us online, understanding that not everyone has the opportunity or the chance to train due to time and location. Our classes are open to all – no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn. Classes are always taught by licensed instructors in RSR who will provide basic instruction in these techniques. People attending will be required to sign our legal waiver and anyone under 18 will need a parent/guardian's permission.

Please note that these classes are not meant to replace a real dojo (we are confident we can teach basic techniques this way), but rather to encourage students to eventually seek out real instruction at an affiliated RSR dojo, attend official RSR seminars and/or travel to Tokyo to visit the Honbu for further and more detailed instruction.

In the memory of Yoshitsune Otani Sensei (1929 – 2002), we continue to practice Budo (武道) as well as our self-sustaining communal approach to learning. None of our instructors are paid and all of our senior members shoulder organizational responsibilities.

The New York Budo Association does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference or national origin. We provide an active community where individuals from all backgrounds may develop themselves physically and mentally through the above arts. We promote understanding and the practice of these traditional Japanese arts, as well as other Japanese cultural activities and welcome productive partnerships with schools, other non-profits, and community organizations that enhance understanding of our mission.

What you'll need...

We suggest using a wooden bokken (Japanese white oak is preferred), with a tsuba (guard), and a plastic saya. We normally train with iaito (practice swords – they look real, but are not sharp) for safety. Live blades (sharp swords) are not recommended for beginners as they are extremely sharp and dangerous. We also suggest wearing an obi (belt), as well. Eventually we can help you find a full uniform (dogi, hakama, and obi). Knee pads are also suggested as well.

For Kyudo we suggest using resistance bands (drawing of the Yumi (bow) as well as a wooden dowel which can be used to replicate the feeling of an arrow. We can advise you on your practice.

Goals
35 of 50 patrons
50 PATRONS = 2 ONLINE CLASSES PER WEEK

If we can get 50 patrons we will add a second day of Kyudo class per week – currently we are offering 1 class with an instructor per week.
