Wrongfully convicted for over 23 years I was faced with one of life’s toughest challenges. I was only 21 years old when charged with two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. That would mean at my time of release in August of 2019 I had actually spent more time in a prison than in a free world.

I experienced the downside of life for almost a quarter of a century, I almost drowned at times. Imagining better days would serve as my floating device. I recall running the track in prison repeating to myself, “it’s not where you are Ricky, it’s where you’re going!”
I made myself repeat it when I didn’t feel like it, when I was in my darkest space, even when at times I wasn’t sure if I believed it anymore. But it was true, for me and for so many others going through their own challenge or difficulty. “It’s not where you are, it’s where you’re going.”

It took 23 years for it to materialize but it finally proved itself true and I’m now experiencing “THE UPSIDE OF LIFE.”

One day my wife, Dawn, had asked me, “Why do you always share the downside of what you went through when the upside has more to offer to people who may be suffering themselves and need to see that life can and does get better?” She was spot on! She suggested that we keep on amplifying the message of wrongful conviction in America and educating people about what’s needed, while also creating a platform that shows people that they have the same ability to be Resilient and to overcome and to experience “THE UPSIDE OF LIFE.”
