We train the '4Ps' to Master an American Accent:
Pronunciation
Prosody
Posture
Person
Pronunciation objectives (examples):
- Drilling = accurately articulate sounds effortlessly (even tongue twisters and difficult clusters).
- Master challenging sounds that you might not have in your first language (TH, the American R, schwa, the Dark L, Glottal stops)
- Connect words seamlessly by assimilating, gliding, linking, and blending between words.
Prosody objectives (examples):
-Syllable Stress
- Rhythm
- Intonation
- Vocal Fry & Upspeak
- Placement
- Nasality
- Advanced Prosody ( breathiness, volume modulation, etc…)
Posture objectives (examples):
- Train your muscle memory into automaticity for difficult sounds and transitions for more natural flow to your speech.
- Hold your mouth in the American posture.
Person objectives (examples):
- Envision the person behind the words to make them come alive off the page.
- Describe their attitudes, emotions, intentions, motivations, and subtext for more in-depth readings.

Do you know your 20%? 80% of your accent problems can be solved by focusing on the 20% of the high-priority mistakes. That's called the Pareto principle.
Preparing and knowing the most EFFECTIVE path is the most important thing to start with. "If you gave me 4 hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first 3 hours sharpening my axe." ~Abraham Lincoln
Many people know they want to change their accent, but they don't know what the problems are. Or, they know some of the problems, but not all of them. Or, they don't know which ones to start with. Or, they don't know what to do about it!
I can help you with all of these in just 45 minutes! You'll leave with a list of your specific accent issues, and an Accent Action Plan so you know your 20%, your highest priorities!
That's how I work with you. We make a list of all your mistakes and errors and prioritize the most important ones to eliminate first. That way, you'll make the most progress as soon as you start!
How does the assessment work?
Before we meet:
1. You'll get a confirmation email. It will contain:
- Instructions and what to expect during our time together.
- Specific texts I want you to read when we meet
- A link to my personal calendar to book a time to meet.
When we meet
2. You'll do some spontaneous speaking with me.
3. I'll ask you questions while I take notes on your pronunciation and prosody.
4. Then, you'll read from a specific text that has ALL the accent features I'm looking to test you on.
5. You'll read the text two times. Once slowly for (pronunciation) then once as fast as you want (for prosody). I'll be taking notes.
6. We'll go over the list, prioritizing the 20% to focus on, and dividing them into the categories of Pronunciation vs. Prosody
After we meet:
7. Your homework will be to read both texts in a video recording yourself. You don't have to show your face if you don't want to, but I highly encourage it because it helps me see your mouth for your pronunciation and oral posture. You'll keep this recording so you can have evidence of your progress. I'll ask you to compare that video and a later video for you to compare!
8. Additional homework will be given if you're motivated to start on your own!
How long will it take? Usually, we finish in about 45 minutes. If somebody has a lot of questions, it could last a bit longer. You can always send me a message with additional questions :)
Do I need to take notes? Nope. Put yourself in my hands. I'll create a shared google doc (or Notion page, if you prefer) for us. This is your Individual Accent Assessment & Action Plan. We'll keep it in the cloud and add your resources, activities, etc... anytime we meet I'll take all the notes. I'll give you some homework you start on your own from Day 1!
What will happen after the assessment? Even if I never see you again, you can use this Accent Assessment and Action Plan as a guide to know where you should focus 20% of their efforts on accent to get 80% of the benefits! In fact, that's why the assessment is so cheap. It takes me time (and years of developing my skills), but I want everyone to have access to a plan they can use and know what they can do for themselves! Honestly, anybody could spend the time and find everything they need to change their accent online for free. It's possible, it would just take a really long time. But hey, if that's your superpower, I'm happy to just point you in the right direction! Even if I never see you again, you can still attend my FREE Clubhouse rooms and FREE Office Hours to pop in and ask a question. Hopefully, though, what will happen next is that you'll decide which membership is right for you. Group classes, 1:1, or just offering support!
