For the past six years, Backbench has given a voice to a new generation of political writers – providing a platform to express their opinions on seismic political events. 

In an era when political debates are toxic and sensationalised, Backbench provides a space for reasoned arguments and constructive disagreements. An antidote to the age of outrage.

By becoming a Backbench patron, you will be supporting a website that fosters opinionated political discussion not filled with hate and fury. And you will also be supporting the talented young writers who are given free support and mentoring by Backbench.

As if this isn’t enough, we are offering awesome Backbench merchandise (yes, there is a George Orwell tote bag), and journalism training from Backbench Director and former BBC Reporter Sam Bright.

• We will use donations to expand our marketing and ensure that our writers reach a wide audience. 

• We also want to make sure that our brilliant editors and directors receive some financial compensation, since they currently work for free.
