About Audrey Eschright

Calagator was started in 2008 as an answer to Portland's growing user group and tech community. We felt that a piece of infrastructure was needed to tie together the numerous overlapping interests and build the strongest possible environment for learning and collaboration. Today, our original site at hosts an amazing variety of event listings every week and remains a key part of the community. The underlying open source project is rebounding from a period of dormancy -- and as the person who originally brought us together, I'm excited to shape our next steps toward building a calendar system that can be used by all kinds of communities, around the world.

My initial focus will be in three areas:
  • Improve the usability of and ensure it stays relevant to the Portland tech community
  • Create stable maintenance for the Calagator open source project
  • Mentor new contributors to the project, especially those who are new to open source in general

About me
I'm a software developer and community organizer whose career has been shaped by Calagator and the work I started in 2007-08 to create the kinds of resources I needed to become a better programmer and technologist. What started out as a desire to know which local user groups were meeting on which nights turned into so much more.

Although I founded Calagator, I've never been directly paid to work on it, nor has any other contributor. We started as an all-volunteer project with a focus on bringing a community together. Over time, that volunteer focus has been less and less sustainable. Many contributors have stepped back because they needed to focus on their primary job and family, because they had reached the skill level where the project was no longer important to their learning, or because we were unable to provide enough support in terms of mentoring and maintenance.

What I bring to the project now:
  • Over a decade of experience as a Ruby and Rails developer and devops specialist
  • Project management and mentorship
  • Deep knowledge of open source communities and Portland's technology history
  • The institutional knowledge of Calagator and how it was built
  • A focus on inclusion and accessible communication that can be seen in my work on The RecompilerThe Responsible Communication Style Guide, and with Safety First PDX.

How will the money be spent?
To begin, you'll be funding 5-10 hours a month of my own work on the project. Following that, I aim to support additional contributors with specialties like UX, documentation, and project management to address specific areas of our roadmap. If we can go further, we'd be able to grow that team and create a globally-relevant product. Each month I'll provide an overview of what we accomplished and how your funding helped us do it.

The Portland tech calendar at is sponsored by Stumptown Syndicate, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, which provides the hosting.

From Portland to the world

We've had big ideas from the start, and there is so much we can do with Calagator as a platform if it becomes more accessible to use, deploy, and contribute. Having a way to discover and promote events is core to how communities are shaped, but more and more of the tools people have available are locked into silos like Facebook that don't align with our own values and goals. With your support, we can start to do the things that will let any community make use of this platform and control their own data -- even communities that are online-only or geographically distributed, regardless of their technical ability.
$210.22 of $500 per month
At $500 each month, I'll be able to do the basic maintenance the open source project needs -- bug triage, security updates, and other essentials.
