About Carter

nice to see you! my name is carter – you can refer to me with they pronouns. I'm a digital creator, artist, and activist. My mediums are podcast and audio journalism, vlog-style YouTube videos, and essay writing. The smaller pieces end up on Twitter, Instagram, or my Redbubble shop.

These ventures are on the topic of whatever hyperfixation my ADHD desires, for example:

theatre, design, lighting, management, graphics, photoshop, illustrator, indesign, publishing, writing, video production, after effects, premiere pro, music production, audition, logic pro, coding, c++, c#, java, cats, cooking, baking, houseplants, horticulture, automation and power scripting, streaming, obs, podcasts, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, dance, law, justice, housing equality, queer history, jewish history, interior design, city planning, urban development, roads and transit systems, electrical engineering, painting, animation, soldering, microcontrollers, and literally so much more.

I was born and raised simultaneously in Orlando, FL and on the Internet. Over the course of the early 2000's society went from dial-up and seconds-long processing speeds to cloud computing, machine learning, and near-instantaneous transfer of information. This has given me unique insight into how we can integrate tech into our lives and, eventually, how we can selectively remove it from our every moment.

I attended college at Northwestern University just north of Chicago, Illinois, where I studied computer science, theatre, and psychology. In theatre, I came into my own as a stage manager and lighting designer. As a first-gen, low-income student, I spent most of my extra-curricular time working near-full-time in graphic design and social media marketing. I learned what it meant to be a multimedia artist; that I could only develop my artistic voice if I was working on projects I chose. Thus, my Twitch channel was born!

Originally descripteur, then CaffeinatedCarter, I livestreamed Pokémon, Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, and anything else that tickled my fancy. On Twitch I learned how much I valued the creation of a community around mutual respect, empathy, and a strong sense of humor. This was eventually informed by my work at Northwestern in dialogue spaces and facilitated learning. Now that we are two years into a newly digital paradigm, digital communities matter more important than ever. At the same time, they function less effectively than ever, too.

Moving forward into the 2020's, I hope to pull together the network of incredible people I've met across technology, art, law, education, and gaming spaces. I want to create a hub of knowledge and creative force where ideas and passions are shared with the lightness and openness every young artist deserves. I hope to establish myself as a name in equity and disability podcast spaces; I'm working to carve my niche into the YouTube ecosystem, too.
