About The Cocker Spaniels

My name is Sean Padilla, and I make music under the name "The Cocker Spaniels."

I grew up listening to hip-hop, but my biggest musical heroes are Prince, Bob Pollard, Kevin Shields, J Dilla, and Alice Coltrane. I try to write about my experiences, as well as those of my friends and family, as directly as possible, while still leaving room for poetry and imagination. I try to craft songs that are catchy and melodic without being formulaic; play them in ways that push my abilities without being overly technical; and record them in ways that are loose, playful, and a little noisy. I want my songs to sound and feel like audio letters from a weird yet kind friend.

I've been writing songs since I was five years old (I'm 40 now). As a teenager, I taught myself how to play guitar, bass, drums, and piano, then started recording my songs on a cassette multi-track recorder. As a college student, I served as the musical director of a gospel choir.

From 1993 to 2014, I recorded and released 10 albums’ worth of music, and toured the United States five times. I sang and played everything on most of my recordings, and performed most of my shows solo, with the help of loops, prerecorded tracks, and computer manipulation. My most well-known song, "The Only Black Guy at the Indie-Rock Show," was released in 2003, and continues to reach the ears of kindred spirits. At the peak of the song's popularity, I was asked by renowned art-rock band TV on the Radio to open all of the Texas dates of their Return to Cookie Mountain tour.

In 2012, I started playing full-band shows, with bassist Stephen Pierce and drummer Alan Lauer serving as my rhythm section. 2014's Plays Well with Others EP, which was recorded with Stephen and Alan, is a fitting testament to our chemistry as musicians and friends.

In 2014, I moved from Austin, TX to Charlotte, NC to be with Layne, the person who is now my spouse. We've been happily married for seven years, and we have three beautiful, brilliant kids. (That's our four-year-old son Ezra in my profile photo; he was two years old when the pic was taken.)

Although I never stopped writing songs, I did put recording and performing on the back burner for a while. I started a freelance booking agency called Happy Nomad to help DIY-level artists of all genres book tours across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. I also found full-time work as the accountant of a property management company. Between my two jobs and Erica's work as a social media influencer (under the name "Mama in Colour"), we've been able to support our family together.

I used the money I made from booking tours to offset the cost of health insurance, which eats up a full third of the salary that my accounting job pays me. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic ground my booking work to halt. I started this Patreon in the spring of 2020 as a new way to supplement my income.

In 2021, I released my first full-length album in more than a decade, The Cocker Spaniels Are Still Alive, and So Are You. Although it was initially intended as a compilation of the songs I'd been posting on Patreon, it slowly grew into 'a tribute to my spouse, our children, and our cats; a meditation on grief, loss, birth, and life; a reflection of my growth as a person and a musician over the last decade; a souvenir of how I stayed sane through a pandemic and the upheaval it caused."

In 2022, I'm using this Patreon not only to showcase my own music, but also to document my relationship with music in general. All subscribers will have access to:

  • At least one new, unheard, unreleased Cocker Spaniels recording every month
  • Handwritten lyrics and chord charts for songs in various stages of progress
  • Covers of songs by my favorite artists
  • Collaborations with musicians I've befriended over years
  • Remixed/reworked recordings of old songs dating back to my adolescence
  • Souvenirs and stories from past C.Spaniels shows and tours
  • Reviews of other artists' music that I enjoy
I have grown so much as a musician and a human being over the last few years. It would be an honor and a pleasure to share the results of this growth with you. Please step into the Cocker Spaniels' sound-world, and help your weird, kind friend support his family!
