About Eli Ryn Brown

Welcome, everyone!

I'm Shakutake Eli Ryn Brown (all pronouns), a Black, queer, and nonbinary meditation instructor. I have been meditating in both the Zen and Zen Shin styles for 15 years and practicing martial arts for almost 20 years. Currently, I lead the Zen Shin meditation program at the Midwest Buddhist Temple, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temple in Chicago, on unceded Potawatomi, Odawa, and Ojibwe land and am a student of Meido Moore Roshi at Korinji Rinzai Zen Monastery. I also periodically teach various community and martial arts groups, as well as provide free and sliding scale one-on-one sessions for folks looking for guidance and collaboration as they deepen their meditative practices.

My practice is grounded meditation as an act of abolition, and communal healing as part of the radical rest that helps sustain revolutionary action. I use my martial arts and meditation experience to bring accessible community healing options to marginalized groups and people in need, especially queer and trans people of color.

What will you find on this page?

Resources to connect with your breath, your body, your yourself! On this page, you'll find full meditation sessions, breathwork, bodywork, meditative stretching, chanting guides, and so much more! I will be providing live and prerecorded videos weekly, biweekly and monthly for folks to enjoy. Whether you are just starting to explore meditation, or have been a lifelong practitioner, there will be guides and videos that will enable you to deepen your practice and find some calm, insight, and sense of inner stability.

We will explore release, ritual, and rest in all of our meditative exercises while building a community of support for each other along the way. Folks will be able to share their experiences with each other through the page, enabling the often scary and lonely first steps to be celebrated and encouraged in community.

Why should you support my practice?

I believe in trying to live radically in community, providing for and being supported by others. Surviving capitalism and building an anti-capitalist "job" or practice cannot be done alone. By being in community with me, we can both support each other in different ways and practice the joy of true mutual aid and skill-sharing.

With these resources, you can build your practice, care for yourself and find the tools that help you expand in comfort and peace. With your monthly support, I can better provide resources for those in need while being still able to support myself in paying my bills and medical expenses.

Being black, trans, and chronically ill has made navigating the healthcare system expensive and unreliable. I have been on a journey of understanding chronic pain disabilities, and my body has been desperately trying to heal over these last couple of years. This has informed my practice, and I have now incorporated more chronic pain-minded breath and bodywork into my sessions. It has also informed my rest. Your support allows me to support myself without engaging with more violent and ableist capitalist workplaces - allows me to have a queer, trans, and black body that is afforded true rest and healing.
