About Elliott Dunstan

Hi everyone! I'm Elliott Dunstan, a queer speculative fiction writer who writes magical realism, horror, fantasy and slipstream. I create a variety of things, but here you'll largely find my serial novels and non-fiction columns about related issues - queerness, mental illness, disability, decolonization, environmental activism, and anarchist praxis.

Why support me? Obviously, there's no shortage of creators in need right now. But as a writer, I'm firmly against both traditional publishing's gatekeeping and Amazon's extortionism; which puts me in a difficult position where I'm trying to avoid both. I want my writing to be accessible and affordable; that's why I post it for free online and in pay-what-you-want formats, and ask people who can afford it to support me through Patreon, Ko-Fi and donations. That means that when you support me on Patreon, you're also supporting my efforts to keep my writing accessible and readable to people in the global south, in areas without well-funded libraries, in unsupportive homes where they can't bring home obviously-queer fiction, and who can't afford to buy books outright. It's an experiment, but it's one I hope catches on - and I'm far from the first one to do it, either (Cory Doctorow is probably the most high-profile writer to do this kind of thing.) Currently, my Patreon pays for things like my medication, my Internet, and my phone bill.

I am an autistic, deaf & mentally ill mixed-race trans man, which informs my writing immensely - I'm not sure how it couldn't. I offer sensitivity reads for a variety of things, the full list of which is on my website under Services. (That page includes everything I offer, including fact-checking, research, content editing, proofreading, and commissioned writing.)

My current projects include:

Bell, Clock and Candle: My current project, Bell, Clock and Candle is a biweekly-updating fantasy/dieselpunk serial novel. Rook Zeesohn washed up half-drowned from a poison ocean six years ago; now he works for the military as a thaumatist, trying to hide his increasingly-erratic behaviour and magic from his guardian and friends. When Csindra Djaneki, criminal and blood mage, crosses his path with a potential route to answers, Rook decides to get her help one way or another - whether he has to use bribery, blackmail, or force. But back in the concrete jungle of Den Elessa, the Judge's son is missing, and there's a killer stalking the streets. Book 1 - The Nowhere Bird - is currently posting with chapters queued into January 2023. (No joke. It got LONG.)

Patreon supporters get each chapter a week early, and $5+ patrons also get bonus deleted scenes and conlang progress posts for the several constructed languages involved in the secondary world setting. (Kanet'valan, Dani'i Feilim, Shufennese, Nguan-chiut, Shuyekwa, etc.)

Ghosts in Quicksilver: Ghosts in Quicksilver is a biweekly-updating serial novel following a would-be private detective and reluctant medium as she tries to solve a murder and falls into the supernatural world. Ghosts in Quicksilver is urban fantasy and new adult, which means I recommend it largely for 16 and up. There are no explicit sexual scenes, but mature themes are explored, including the consequences of child abuse and PTSD. The main character is brown (mixed) and unsure of her exact ethnicity; on both the aromantic and asexual spectrum; and identifies as a butch lesbian, with some wacky feelings about gender that she'll get around to. Book 1 is complete; preorder Book 2 Feb 10th-April 15th. Book 3 is planned to start in early 2022.

After the Rain and Ruin: A Patreon-only weekly-updating poetic/verse serial novel, following Willow Moray and Cassandra Angevin prior to the events of Ghosts in Quicksilver. $2 patrons will get each section released to them in full online as it is completed; $5 patrons get the online version chapter by chapter, and $10 patrons get it released to them 24 hours earlier!

My complete books include:

Home is Where the Ghosts Are: (2017) A 12-page collection of poetry and prose. The zine contains 7 poems and one short story, straddling the line between fiction and non-fiction in a linked paranormal narrative. The narrator moves into their first apartment and finds traces of the old tenant left behind - both physical and spiritual.

Post-Traumatic Anatomy: (2017) A 40-page chapbook of original, previously unpublished poetry, centering around PTSD, trauma and borderline personality disorder. Trigger warnings apply, particularly for attempted suicide, self-harm, sexual abuse and hospitalization.

The Shining Wire: (2019) A 40-page collection of poetry and prose, exploring what it's like to be partially healed - almost better, but not there yet. The collection includes rabbits, robots, propositional calculus and Russian Roulette as themes. Trigger warnings include ableism, gun violence, domestic violence, attempted suicide and toxic relationships.

Other projects of mine include:

The Gremlin's Library: I review books both on Reedsy and on my blog - you can find them in this category. All patrons get to see book reviews 24 hours (or more) early, through private Google Doc links.

Behind The Curtain: I sometimes post my thoughts on online discourse, social patterns, the mechanics of abuse and the craft of writing in longform. Like the reviews, patrons get to see these 24 hours early, and the category is here.

Goals
$250 - reached! per month
When I hit 250$ monthly, patrons can pick one of either the Alkimia Lore Bible (edition one, at least) and the Kanet'valan Dictionary (again, edition one) as a paperback to be shipped to them.
