About Emily Takes Notes

  • I attend Houston City Council meetings on Wednesdays (and sometimes more!) and produce user-friendly notes in readable and audio formats that keep us up to date on the hyper-local politics that exist closest to us, here in Houston. This team is growing and we want to produce more, like going to committee meetings, attending Harris County Commissioners Court, producing one-off notes on non-City Council related topics, and being able to put out the weekly notes in Spanish.

  • I am a small business owner, producer of the monthly storytelling series Grown-up Storytime and a lifelong Houstonian. I am not a journalist or government official, just a regular person who thinks local government should be more accessible...and maybe even fun???

  • I view the world around me with a critical lens that centers people first. There are certain things that should be human rights for all: housing, food + water, healthcare, education, a livable wage, and yes, even wifi. I believe people should be able to exist without fear of persecution, especially from those who claim to protect us. It is my intention to present clear-minded, even keeled and palatable information and at the same time I want to make it clear that it is very difficult to separate these biases from the way I take notes.

  • Your support will keep Emily Takes Notes regularly occurring, help us make the notes more accessible, help with admin and maintenance costs like website hosting, and allow us to grow. I appreciate it so, so, SO much. If you don’t wish to become a recurring patron and would prefer to make a one-time payment, paypal info is coming soon!

  • Please know that regardless of funding I intend to keep producing the weekly notes and podcast and that they will be accessible and free to those who have access to the internet. You can follow @embaleez on instagram and @emilytakesnotes on twitter to keep updated.
