We'll have a catch up over the phone, shoot the breeze and I'll help answer any specific questions you have about a particular film stock or photographic technique.
When we speak over the phone, I will also give you my grandma's super secret recipe for apple crumble.
Read on to find out a bit more about EMULSIVE, why I'm on Patreon and where your contributions will go. If you have any questions at all, check the FAQ at the bottom of this page, or use the social links on the left to drop me a line.
This page shows my monthly (ongoing) support tiers. If you're looking for to show your support on a one-off basis, please check out this dedicated Patreon page.
BackstoryThe short version: I shoot and experiment with different film stocks, cameras and techniques, then write about and share my experiences with the wider analogue photography community on EMULSIVE.org.
The long version is that I review film stocks and cameras, publish my own photography and thought pieces; as well as publish essays, photo stories and reviews from a network of super-talented and enthusiastic analogue photographers.
I conduct the (now) twice-monthly EMULSIVE Interview: a series of interviews with film photographers the world over. As of August 2021, I am up to 220+ interviews and if you haven't already seen it, I'd highly recommend checking out #187 with Tony Vaccaro, WWII veteran and photographer of some of the most culturally and politically significant figures of the 20th century.
I have also created and manage a network of active communities on various social media; and create and help support various film photography events throughout the year, including the world's largest annual film photography gift exchange, EMULSIVEsanta.
I should mention that this is not my day job...not yet anyway. That's where you come in.
What's this Patreon for?First off, setting up on Patreon to ask for your support was not something I did lightly.
EMULSIVE has been running since June 2015 and since pretty much day one, I've had a standing concern that asking you for money would diminish what it is I do through the website and wider community.
That said, my ongoing costs - both money and time - grow each month and show no sign of slowing down. I'm aiming to make EMULSIVE my full-time focus at some point in the not-so-distant future and need your help to make it happen.
Your support here on Patreon, over at Society6 and elsewhere is helping me to get on top of those costs and allowing me to expand the scope of EMULSIVE to support the growth of the platform, add more features, new content and community initiatives.
If you're a fan of the website and associated online communities, and you want to support me in the creation of more, this is the place where you can help.
How it works and where your money goesYou pledge to donate a certain amount of money per month as an ongoing patronage, or as a one-off show of support. In return, and depending on how much you choose to donate, you can get:
- Access to an ad-free EMULSIVE.org, with the plan being to completely remove display ads once I hit a certain number of patrons.
- Occasional patron-only content, which will be made available on the main website after ~6 months.
- A monthly print from a limited run. Individually signed and numbered by me.
- A phone call with me (it'll be worth it, probably).
- My grandmother's apple crumble recipe (if you want it).
Each of the reward levels is set out in the right-hand column on this page.
Regardless of if you choose to donate or not, you will always have my love and thanks for reading and contributing to the website and community. It is what it is because of you.
Frequently asked questions1) Do I have to pay in US Dollars?
Nope. You pay in your local/selected currency but because Patreon is a US-based website, everything is written in USD. Your payment will be charged in your local currency but converted to USD.
2) Will you have patron-only content?
Yes. The goals (top left of this page), show what patron-specific content/stuff I have planned. I will ensure that any content that will only initially be patron-only, and will make it's way to the main website after a short delay.
3) I don't have much money, how can I help?
There's a $2 per month tier. It might not sound like a lot but it all helps. You can actually set your own patronage everything from 10 cents to a million dollars a month. If you would like to help out in another way, I'm always on the lookout new photographic work, thought pieces and reviews to share with the community, so just drop me a line.
4) Can I stop donating in the future if I can't afford it?
Yes of course. Just log in and update your settings.
5) What will Patreon and other contributions have on the editorial independence of EMULSIVE
None. EMULSIVE will continue to be an independent community resource. I will continue developing my relationships with the film and wider analogue photography industry and continue to build ties between them and the wider community they support.
6) Can you help me with something else?
Yes, absolutely. If you have questions about using Patreon, or encounter any problems with the signup process, their support team is both friendly and helpful. You can send them a message by clicking here. If you have questions specifically about this page, rewards, the EMULSIVE website or just want to chat, drop me a line.
There are more FAQs over on EMULSIVE.org, as well as some extended prattling on about what I'm doing here.
Thanks very much for reading!
No, not cameras, web servers. When I hit this goal, I'll be able to migrate the EMULSIVE.org website to new and better infrastructure, making is faster, more secure and more resilient against bird strike.
