About Reef

What you need to know!

My name is Reef. I have an older sister named Coral, a younger brother named Forest, and our youngest - Oceana. I asked my dad only this 2019 if they meant anything altogether and what he said blew my mind. I giggle a bit just by typing it. He said, "because Coral Reef is the Forest of the Ocean".

I know. It's my parents' fault. But by now you may assume that we grew up loving nature.

Before all that though. You know. Before the kids. It was our parents, Popoy & Yeng's teamwork that birthed another being. And that was H.O.M.E [Hope Of Mother Earth], a student organization founded in late 1992, aimed to immerse their fellow youth to what my parents fell in love with -- the Coral Reefs.

So there was H.O.M.E., executing projects, diving, and educating, then came their eldest, Coral in 1993, then Reef, in '95. Due to the priority shift from org to children, H.O.M.E. rested for more than a decade. Parents had to raise their Coral Reef - family style.

24 years later, I revived H.O.M.E., now operating as a non-government organization, leading school tours, educating kids on how to best inherit the earth we shall leave them with, by making art with the trash collected in coastal cleanups. Most importantly, the dream - Coral Reef Restoration.

Just like a tree, corals absorb carbon from the atmosphere and generate the air we breath. Though occupying >1% of oceanic floor, 25% of marine life depend on coral reefs along with 500 million people for livelihood. They protect us from tsunamis, they're an answer to climate change, and they're the future of medical science. The big "BUT" though, is that today, half of the world's corals have been lost and might all be gone by 2050. So just like reforestation, we're building up once again, the forests of the ocean.

Just recently, #HOMEcasts [podcast] was created in adaptation to the ECQ. This is to reach a larger audience and to connect more authentically by providing easy-to-digest information regarding the environment, and providing the most feasible how-to's people in various lifestyles, always needed. Too often, they're just looking for a place to start.

That's what this Patreon is about. Why it's created. By being a Patron you help us continue #HOMEcasts, our school tours, honing our future designers of earth through art and awareness, and to finally build a sustainable system for restoring the beautiful Coral Reefs of the Philippines.

I personally am very excited to share how we make this happen, to share what we know -- how we keep tomorrow existing through full patron-exclusive content and more.
