About K. Ibura

I'm a writer obsessed with process, obsessed with all the tiny steps it takes to write a story, develop a novel, build a writing career. I believe everyone has a voice and something powerful they can express if they take the time to build the tools and the process to become a writer.

One of my joys as a published writer is sharing my struggles with emerging writers. Somehow, seeing someone's name in print causes us to assume they have some magic that we don't. It's always comforting for me to know that the people I look up to struggle. That way, if I'm challenged, it doesn't mean something's wrong with me, it means the process is hard and I should keep going.

The goal of Notes From the Trenches is to share the challenges, emotions, process, and strategies that emerge during the writing life. It is a place for inspiration, guidance, and behind-the-scenes info to reveal the reality behind building and maintaining writer career.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME
Over the course of my 30 years of writing and publishing, I have been high and I have been low. I had early success and published consistently in anthologies and magazines. In my first decade as a writer, I was sure I would be a big success. Well, I struggled to write novel, became a parent and couldn't find the energy and wherewithal to stay focused on my writing career.

I tried so many different things to reconnect to writing. During the up-and-down years, I published two collections of short stories and continued trying to unlock the mystery of a novel. I reached a turning point last year. I decided to combine project management skills from my day job to my writing life. I pitched and developed a manuscript by coaching myself to mono-task: focus on one step of project development at a time and let myself be imperfect as I made my way to the finish line. Using that strategy, I wrote a book from concept to completion in 8-months.

Navigating away from an emotional relationship to my writing and focusing on logistics and process, has made me much more productive. It takes constant vigilance and constant self-coaching. I'm contracted to write a novel a year for the next two years. On the way, I'll share the project management strategies and structure, as well as the mindset practices I use to surpass overwhelm and lock into productivity.

NOTES FROM THE TRENCHES
We can empower whichever reality we choose—that writing is impossibly challenging or that it's doable with the right strategies and processes. I invite you to join me on the journey of investing in creative growth.
