Any support is welcome. Thank you.
  • For helping to keep kibble in his bowl, Gej will show his appreciation by sending you a monthly photo of his furry self. Yeah, I'm a dog person.
  • And, just for being a supporter, you can reach out and email with AMA style questions which I will answer in a subsequent post.

This Patreon page is primarily about my writing, so if you support at this level, basically the price of a mocha latte:
  • Every month I'll send you a video of me reading either one of my short stories or a chapter from one of my novels.
  • And you'll also get the image of Gej, the chance to send me questions, and join me for a live chat.

Want a sneak peak at some bit of the current thing I'm writing (aka how the sausage is made)? Or maybe a glimpse of a project that stalled and was set aside in favor of something else? At least once per month:
  • You'll get to digitally view a never-before-seen snippet from one of my many projects.
  • And you'll also get the videos of me reading my fiction, and images of Gej.

About Lawrence M. Schoen

Hiya. I'm Lawrence M. Schoen. I've set up this page to help defray the stupidly high healthcare costs stemming from my having multiple myeloma — an incurable but treatable form of cancer. In 2021, between the costs of chemo, other pharmaceuticals, and my insurance out-of-pocket and deductible requirement, along with the premiums, I expect those expenses to top $40,000.

Like many authors, I've worn a lot of hats. Some of you may also know me as a small press publisher, a college professor, a cognitive psychologist, a hypnotist specializing in the issues faced by creative artists, and a klingonist. All those other jobs are part of the gestalt that is me and have informed who I am as a writer. While there's no shortage of SF authors with doctorates or a background in academia, the number whose specialties focus on language and memory is pretty small. Throw in hypnosis and Klingon and it's just me.

Your patronage will allow me to focus on my writing, and the best way I can thank you for that support is to invite you behind the scenes and share the various facets that go into my life as an author. That will include not just fiction that I've written but also stories written by friends and colleagues whom I respect and admire, whose work has influenced and touched my own.

It will also include snippets from various works in progress —mostly fiction, but also a nonfiction book on Hypnosis for Writers that I'm intending to release eventually.

A handful of you will receive individual autographed author copies of my books (as soon as they are published, or physical proofs of the books I publish myself), one-one hypnosis sessions (via Skype), even the opportunity to be Tuckerized as an anthropomorphic sapient character in the third Barsk novel, all depending on the level of your support.

At a minimum though, you'll have a chance to learn some Klingon and you'll get photos of my awesome dog, Gej.

In 2007, I was a finalist for the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. I've been nominated once for the Hugo Award, and six times for Nebula Award. I've won the Cóyotl Award for Best Novel twice. My fiction ranges from light, humorous tales of a stage hypnotist entrancing aliens on interstellar cruise ships to more literary explorations of how we think about death, race, and free will via a metaphor of anthropomorphic animals.

At the end of the day though, I think every author is writing about the human condition, whether we do it with ordinary people, extraterrestrials, or talking elephants.

So that's why this Patreon page exists. Many of the rewards that I'll post will include the context of where I am in my treatment because I find sharing the challenge of my medical travails actually helps me to live it, reframing the experience away from victimhood and granting me more agency almost every day. And who knows, maybe you'll find this approach inspirational as you deal with your own life's ordeals. It could happen.

And regardless of whether you opt to become a patron or not, thanks for reading this far. Here's a link to free copies of the very first story from the Amazing Conroy universe. I hope you like it.
