About Luke Haynes

Hi, I'm Luke! I'm an architect turned artist who has been a professional, full-time quilter for over 20 years! I originally taught myself how to quilt in high school as a way to alchemize and survive a traumatic childhood born from poverty, loneliness, and no real place to call "home". I fell in love with quilting because it represented creative agency: a way for me to care for myself by creating objects that could quite literally bring me comfort and warmth when there were no other sources around.

I went on to study architecture at Cooper Union on scholarship and learned about how to physically design infrastructures that could provide regenerative care for humans in the world. Through this work, I realized that quilts were sculptural objects that had the opportunity to create the same impact that architecture could. I ultimately found my way back to quilting, researched its rich history, honed my sewing techniques, and got to work.

Over the last two decades, I have traveled the world lecturing and teaching people how to sew and create art. My work has been shown over 200 times and has been acquired by dozens of museums, private institutions, and fine art collectors. I have partnered with big-box stores, corporations, festivals, and brands to create custom quilts and assets. I have collaborated and had the privilege to create work and shows with other brilliant quilters in the field. In 2002, I created a method for creating photo-realistic portrait quilts out of only fabric and museums, media, and art critics labeled me the first to create quilts like this and innovate this technique. Since then, hundreds of students have learned this technique under me while others have adopted it independently. Today, Portrait Quilts can regularly be found in quilt shows and galleries.

Community is the most important part of my art practice, which is why I have created this Patreon page. I want to talk, listen, teach, and connect with you about the things that bring us purpose and joy. I want to create work that matters, teach skills that inspire, and have conversations that bring us all a little closer.

There are many different Tier options that offer different benefits. From class discounts to virtual "Happy Hours", private chat rooms to discounts on commissioned quilts -- I want to create meaningful benefits to show my gratitude for your generous support that allows me to keep doing what I do.
