About MariNaomi

My name is MariNaomi and I'm a queer mixed-race Japanese-American visual storyteller and community organizer.

I've been making autobio comics since the nineties. So far, I've published four graphic memoirs (Space award-winning Kiss & Tell, Eisner-nominated Dragon's Breath and Other True Stories, Turning Japanese, and I Thought YOU Hated ME), the critically acclaimed young adult graphic novel Life on Earth trilogy (including Losing the Girl, which as recently banned in Katy, Texas), and the erotic fruits-and-veggies book Dirty Produce. In November 2022, Amble Press will publish my mixed-media graphic memoir I Thought You Loved Me.

In 2014, I created the Cartoonists of Color and Queer Cartoonists databases, and more recently, the Disabled Cartoonists database. These resources, which feature thousands of comics creators, are free to the public. They're a good place to browse and discover the work and talent of marginalized creators.

I've twice toured with the queer literary road show Sister Spit (2011 and 2018). I have taught classes for the California College of the Arts MFA program and mentored numerous students privately and through colleges (a mentorship is one of the tiers of this Patreon, if you have a project you'd like help with).

This Patreon was created as a way to support my work and the databases, and to reward and connect with my readers. On it, you'll find thousands of exclusive diary comics, new comics before the rest of the internet sees them, out-of-print comics, and special offers that are exclusive to my patrons (such as patron-only art sales and commission opportunities).

If you enjoy my comics or have benefited from my community work, please consider chipping in. Thank you so much!
