About Nebal Maysaud

Welcome to my Patreon, where we celebrate a diversity of musical languages and innovate our musical practices.

Music is a powerful tool to bring our communities together; It gives power to those who often feel voiceless. That’s why I became a composer.

About

I studied composition from Joanne Metcalf, Asha Srinivasan, and Andrew Cole at Lawrence University and briefly studied with Dirk D’Ase in Vienna. Since then, I had commissions/performances in DC, Philadelphia, Ohio, Wisconsin, Chicago, Minnesota, Seattle, and Finland by esteemed organizations and performers such as Joe Connor, Juventas, Great Noise Ensemble, Kin of the Moon, Versoi, and more!

I’m also a student of maqam, studying repertoire from Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt during the Arab Golden Age of music. There is so much room for all musicians to innovate their practice by learning maqam, and I want to share what I learn with you!

Background

When I graduated college, I had a strong understanding of western classical music, but barely any knowledge of the music of my own culture. I realized that if I want my music to reflect who I am, I needed to learn maqam.

This exploration into a new musical voice led me to develop some core values that I carry in my practice. Music is not just about emotion, for me, it’s one of many tools we need in order to liberate our communities and build solidarity with each other.

Why you should subscribe

Many of my patrons discover music they never would have found on their own through this Patreon. In addition, it also exposes them to musical languages they are not familiar. Music education, especially in the US usually focuses on a specific classical tradition, but as our world becomes more global and interconnected, it becomes even more important for musicians to be literate, and supportive of underrepresented musical languages.

I created this Patreon so that we can build a community around artists of diverse backgrounds while also creating room for my own artistic practice to become more accessible to those who can’t afford standard commission rates.

What you get

  • Learn about music from the Arab world and other undervalued art forms through our listening guides
  • Be the first to know about any of my compositions, recordings, and projects
  • Help fund collaborations with other artists who usually can’t afford a full commission fee

If we can make it this far that would be awesome!! I'd be able to support 3 clients who are doing work in community building and action for free.
