About PalmDB

Welcome! 👋

You've reached the home for supporters of the world's biggest Palm OS community, app catalog, and preservation project. Established in 2018, PalmDB exists as an homage to the smartphones and PDAs of the early millennium that changed the world, yet today are all too often forgotten. Our goal is to collect as much of this history as possible and make it accessible through modern, user-friendly means--before it's too late.

What is Palm? 🌴

Palm Computing, Inc. was founded in 1992 by Jeff Hawkins, originally to write software for other companies exploring the then-new field of pocket computing devices. When these other devices failed, Palm embarked on the journey to create their own, culminating in the release of the Palm Pilot 1000 in 1996. The Pilot popularized the concept of mobile devices as we know them today: miniature computers with touchscreen interfaces and an emphasis on connectivity.

Despite having no centralized storefront, the Palm OS app market was thriving for nearly two decades and gave birth to thousands of popular games and applications, some of which grew into companies which still exist to this day. Later devices also featured full-color screens, cameras, MP3 players, Bluetooth, WiFi and cellular, and more. Creative developers pushed Palm to the limit and took full advantage of each new feature, laying the groundwork for things to come.

In 2009, Palm released webOS, a highly influential but tragically short-lived gesture-based operating system whose inspiration can still be felt in recent versions of Android and iOS. Shortly thereafter, Palm was acquired by HP and its properties subsequently sold off.

What is PalmDB? 📱

PalmDB is a website (palmdb.net) and Discord community (join us!) dedicated to Palm apps and devices. Through Discord, we coordinate to collect apps and digital media for upload to the main site, help members find devices to buy, and generally nerd out over cool old technology!

Our website, palmdb.net, runs on a custom web platform built from the ground up for sustainability. Server requirements are minimal, and the database is fully portable. Registered members can even download a copy for re-hosting. Content is managed on an open collaboration model: anyone can join and create or edit posts anywhere on the site, yet without sacrificing content moderation. All post edits are versioned, protecting old edits from being lost in the event of low-quality changes.

Also, say hello to our friendly neighborhood automated assistant, JeffyBot! He often helps us around Discord and with uploading new files to the site. He might sing a song for you too, if you ask nicely.

Why Patreon? 🤔

As with any website, PalmDB has to foot the bill on server costs. While our sustainable model keeps the price of hosting far lower than other app catalogs, your support guarantees we can remain online for a long, long time.

However, the biggest cost to operating PalmDB is simply time. And as they say, time is money. We have thousands of apps and media collected and waiting to be added to the site, but this requires deduplication, categorization, and hand-crafted metadata to make content searchable and well-presented.

There is also a ton of opportunity for innovation on our custom web platform. With your support we can continue to invest time into developing new features and improving existing ones so that PalmDB is a great place for everyone.

Today, there are more than 3.5 billion smartphone users in the world--and counting. If you're one of them, the history of Palm is your history. At PalmDB, we believe this history deserves to be remembered and made available to all, both today and well into the future. We'd love to have you join us on the journey!
