About Phoenix Poetry Slam

Phoenix Poetry Slam from Lawn Gnome Publishing is the result of years of seeking talented new voices and promoting strong literary events.

What is Phoenix Poetry Slam?

The Phoenix Poetry Slam is an active series of poetry slams designed to improve public speaking and literary skills in the Valley through competition, open mics and workshops. Our events encourage self development and team building through competitive writing and performance, while seeking to engage our communities through "randomly selected judges" at our events. We encourage our audiences to react and have safe, meaningful conversations with performers about topics, writing style, and culture.

The Phoenix Poetry Slam from Lawn Gnome Publishing brought the 2014 Individual World Poetry Slam to Phoenix, AZ.

Our mission is to provide a space for local writers to explore and perfect their own craft. Our commitment is community. We welcome persons of any and all genders, sexualities, ethnicities, abilities, ages, etc. As writers and literary critics, we value freedom of speech and thus do not limit, moderate or otherwise censor any content, and so there is a blanket trigger warning for all events. However, we strive to create a constructive atmosphere of equality, sensitivity, and progress, one that encourages discussion and actively opposes marginalization of any persons or group. Our goal isn’t tolerance of diversity, but its empowerment and alliance.

How May I Help Phoenix Poetry Slam?

In the summer of 2020, five top-ranked poets work together to develop poetry that will be performed as a cohesive group. These poets are Miss Anthropy, Civil, Mr. Larry Moore, Kaiti Pritchett and PS Froberger under the direction of Aaron Hopkins-Johnson. Our team is preparing for competition in two regional tournaments and an international championship. This requires hours of writing, practice, rehearsals, team-building, and fundraising to achieve. Every dollar contributed not only allows these artists to showcase their work, but liberates creativity by allowing more time for the artists to focus of unity, exploration of ideas, and perfection of craft.

What Do I Get?

As a Patreon contributor to Phoenix Poetry Slam, you will receive updates on the team's progress and growth through access to ebooks, online poetry, chapbooks, video of performances and invites to performances. You may also see their progress weekly at The Lost Leaf in Downtown Phoenix every Thursday at 7pm!
