It's #inktober again! This is my fifth year participating. That first year is what kicked off my daily #inkyDays drawings, which still continue.

This year, I'll be bouncing around different prompt lists but trying to stay with the original #inktober challenge of drawing with only black ink. Yes, it will be hard to give up all my other inks, but it's just for one month.

So, here we go!

#inktober 10/01/21

For today's prompt, I'm going with the #Microber2021 list: "Biofilm"!

-------------------------

#inktober 10/02/21

For today's prompt, I'm going with the #Microber2021 list: "Cell"!

-------------------------

#inktober 10/03/21

Following a prompt from the #Microber2021 list again for today's drawing: "Flagella"

I wasn't sure how I wanted to arrange the little creatures at first, so I did some little test-sketches and decided on random arrangement.

-------------------------

#inktober 10/04/21

For today's drawing, I'm combining prompts from two different lists: "Knot" from the official #inktober list, and "Dormancy" from the #Microber2021 list.  I had fun with this one!

-------------------------

#inktober 10/05/21

Today's #Microber2021 list prompt is 'Lysis', and it got me thinking about the polar nature of the phospholipids in membranes.  Lysis is the disruption of the membrane. At first, I was thinking the individual phospholipids might be sort of exploded apart from each other. But they wouldn't stay that way for long at all. They'd form little micelles to isolate those hydrophobic tails.

-------------------------

#inktober 10/06/21

I'm loving the #Mibrober2021 prompt list. Today's is "Sporulation", so I went with fungi.

-------------------------

#inktober 10/07/21

Today's Microber prompt is "Phage"! I decided to draw them in a circular symmetrical pattern.

-------------------------

#inktober 10/08/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is 'Quorum Sensing', and I'm going with an abstract representation of density triggering bioluminescence in these little bacteria.

Yeah, I'm making an exception for today's drawing and using yellow ink to indicate bioluminescence.  If I were to draw this again, I'd probably dilute the yellow ink so that it isn't as intense and more a hint of a glow.

-------------------------

#inktober 10/09/21

While I'm following today's #Microber2021 prompt, I'm going very abstract in today's drawing. The prompt? "Niche".

-------------------------

#inktober 10/10/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Defence".  My brain went right to anti-bodies, which I've drawn at a bigger scale than the rest of this imaginary cell.

There was a water main leak near my house this morning, and jackhammers and drills...so much noise! I drew this one during a brief more-quiet time, but I felt rushed and stressed.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/11/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Streaking", and it's bringing back memories of my days in the lab.

Before filling in the growth, I sketched out the 'streak' pattern.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/12/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is 'Wall'. So I played with negative space and stippled some plant cell membranes and hinting at chloroplast thylokoid structures, leaving space between cells where the cell walls would be.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/13/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Division". Instead of arithmetic, I took that inspiration and went with an abstract representation of Cell Division.

I had to draw this quickly, as I had to go take care of some family stuff all day. I want to play with this pattern more, eventually.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/14/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Chemotaxis". What a fun prompt!! I decided to draw a 'tumbler' out of range of the gradient, and a 'swimmer' moving up the gradient.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/15/21

Today's #Microber prompt is "Toxin". I started out thinking about how a toxin can be specific to an organism. Then thinking about testing potential toxins to bacteria on growth plates.

When I was almost finished with the drawing, I realized it looked like a face. Oh no! I had to adjust and change my vision to what you see here. Maybe it's a biofilm, maybe it's a single cell, but the toxin is isolated.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/16/21

Here are some imaginary Cyanobacteria, inspired by today's #Microber2021 prompt: "Extremophile".

--------------------------

#inktober 10/17/21

"Swarm" is today's #Microber2021 prompt, so I went with an abstract swarm of ants. I tried to get a close-up of the gold shimmer in the ink, and it almost worked. You can see the shimmer in some of the ants here.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/18/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Motility". So, of course, my mind when to cilia covered micro-organisms.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/19/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Secretion", and I decided to go with some budding cell patterns. It kinda got away from me and I got carried away with drawing buds.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/20/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Luminescence". So, I tried out some abstract fireflies.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/21/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Plasmid". These cool little double stranded rings of DNA are most commonly found in bacteria.

I've gone with some abstract plasmids next to chromosomal DNA in today's drawing.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/22/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is "Persistance", and I took a little more time than usual to think about what to draw.

In Microbiology, persistance can be associated with changes in a microorganism that allow it to survive. A bacteria may go into a persistant state, to survive the introduction of anti-biotics to it's environment. How was I going to incorporate these concepts in a drawing?

I went back to a drawing from earlier this month, from the 4th. That prompt was 'Dormancy', and the shape fit well with what I was thinking...a pulling in and tightening up. The larger dots, in the background, represent an antibiotic.

--------------------------

#inktober 10/23/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is 'Antibiotic'. I went with an abstraction of a pattern that will be very familiar to a few of my fans (in microbiology).

--------------------------

#inktober 10/24/21

Today's #Microber2021 prompt is zoonotic, and it's been raining a lot here in San Francisco, so I decided to draw raining covid particles for today's #inktober drawing.

If you'd like to play with more dynamic versions of this idea, check out my viralSnowflakes game or my Smash-a-rona game.

I started with drawing the outlines (abstract), and wasn't sure if I wanted to go with stipple or solid fill.  One advantage of starting with stipple is that I can always fill it in if I don't like it.  Another advantage? If I do indeed like it, I'm done.
