About Space Apps NYC

We are Space Apps NYC, a grassroots space hacker community established in 2012 that grew from the NASA Space Apps Challenge, an event that was founded to improve life on Earth and further the exploration of space. At over 2600 members in the tri-state area, NYC is the largest regional community of this type in the world – and we’re creating a next generation space science & technology hub in New York City (#NewSpaceCity).

In 2012, New York City became a founding site for NASA's Space Apps Challenge, a worldwide hackathon that has enabled historic global collaboration between volunteers, private companies, NGOs, and government agencies. In 2017 over 25,000 people participated all over the world from 187 locations in 69 countries building 1,300 projects. Since its founding, our Space Apps NYC team has locally organized six hackathons and three conferences, has hosted NASA's global mainstage two years in a row, and has grown our diverse space hacker community to the largest and most active chapter with over 2600 hackers! Also, by partnering with Space Apps Brooklyn, we are expanding to more boroughs in order to run multiple locations for the hackathon and bootcamp.

We’re looking to grow beyond an annual hackathon into a community organization which curates a STEAM community of space enthusiasts from all backgrounds in New York City. Our goal is to introduce the new space industry to groups underrepresented in STEAM fields by hosting space and tech events throughout the city.

Over 40% of our attendees and speakers are women, and we're proud to co-organize our events with partners like Womensphere and the Lower Eastside Girls Club, both of which empower women and young girls into leadership and technical roles. We also have a team of women mentors from NASA's Datanauts program on site helping our teams.
We've worked with all the major new space agencies and companies in the city, and host one of the largest new space conferences in New York. Not to mention we've been the Mainstage for the NASA Space Apps Challenge, connecting us with local space hackathon organizers from over 160 cities around the world and live streamed to 10k people.
