About State Violence Research Network

The State Violence Research Network brings together academics and activists seeking to understand, explore, and define examples of and responses to state violence across the world. Currently based in the School of Arts, Languages, and Cultures at the University of Manchester, the network is rapidly expanding and seeking to become financially independent and sustainable.

Founded in September 2018, the SVRN held its first international conference in April 2019, and is currently organising its second conference, to be held in April 2020. Within this short space of time, the network has grown to sixty members. Seeking to run differently to more traditional academic networks, the SVRN is run by two co-facilitators (George Francis Bickers and Philip Sulter) and a group of Working Group facilitators, each of whom have equal say in the network's growth and major decisions. These five working groups were the network's first major effort towards expansion, and each group (coordinated by its respective facilitator) is autonomous under the umbrella of the SVRN.

We see the use of Patreon as a commitment to mutual aid. None of the network's facilitators are paid by the network, but give their time freely to support the work of the SVRN. We charge no membership fees, and make no profit from our events and conferences. This decision was made so that access to these spaces would be as open and accessible as possible. As such, we are seeking mutual aid donations from those able to afford them in order to make the network financially sustainable and independent without adding restrictions to membership, events, or participation in our conferences. This is where you come in. If you can stand in solidarity with the network, and donate money in mutual aid, we would be very grateful.

In solidarity,

The facilitators of the State Violence Research Network.
$0 of $110 per month
The SVRN is seeking to become financially sustainable. To do this, we need to secure around £85 a month (approx $110). With this, we can survive a loss of funding, and maintain the core functions of the network outside of university funding.
